Introduction to the Course:


COURSE CODE : ME-1001L
CREDIT HOURS : 02
COURSE CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING MAIN TOPICS:
1. Bench Fitting – Woodworking
2. Bench Fitting – Metal working
3. Lathe Machine
4. Milling Machine
5. Welding

Objective of the Course:


To familiarize the students with the old and new techniques in the field of Bench Fitting,
manufacturing of metal parts by using conventional tools and machines.
Course Outline
1. Introduction: What is in the Workshop, General Workshop Safety
Precautions, Shop Floor Safety, Accidents types and prevention
techniques, Types of workshop tools and machines
2. Wood Working: Wooden jobs are made of different shapes and
dimensions that include: Simple wooden block, Slot Joint, Cross lap
Joint, Double Slot Joint, Dove Tail Joint, Wooden Tower.
3. Metal Working: Metal jobs are made of different shapes and
dimensions that include: Simple Metal Square Plate, V Notch Plate with
single Drill, Slot Joint, lap Joint, Joint, Dove Tail Joint.
4. Lathe Machine Operations: Facing, Turning, Step Turning, Taper
Turning, Drilling, Boring, Parting, Tapping, Threading and Knurling.
5. Milling Machine Operations: Face Milling and End Milling on Vertical
Milling Machine. Slab Milling on Horizontal Milling Machine
6. Drilling Operation: Drilling operation by Vertical Drill Press
7. Welding Operations: Electric Arc Welding (Stick welding and MIG
welding), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding and Spot Welding

INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Working safely is the first essential of an
operator
2. Work safely for the most important people in your
life, your family.
3. An operator should learn the safe-way of doing
things, and he must also know ‘the unsafe way’.
4. The safe way is the correct way and efficient way
of doing things.
5. “Safety” is an attitude for learning and practicing
the safe habits.
6. A good and safe operator is one who is ‘safety
conscious’ always, using safe and accepted
practices.
CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS
Generally, the causes of accidents (things that
can lead to accidents) are listed below:

1. Operating without authority


2. In operative safety devices
3. Operating at unsafe speeds
4. Using unsafe equipment
5. Working in unsafe position or posture
6. Operating without using PPEs
7. Working in a noisy or bad environment
8. Defective working conditions, i.e. slippery,
corroded, cracked etc.
9. Unsafe lighting and ventilation
10. Unsafe dress (improper or loose garment)
11. Not interested (distracted in work)
12. Lack of skill or knowledge.

1. Before operating a machine, all
protective guards should be in their proper
places.
2. Machines should be operated by
authorized operators only.
3. A machine should not be stopped by
hands or body.
4. Before staring a machine, operator
should check that the work and tools are
clamped securely.
5. Shop floor should be free from oil, clear
of metal chips or curls or waste pieces.

6. Operator should leave the machine only
when it comes to a full stop.
7. Machines and switches should be
operated by the same operator.
8. Operator should not lean towards the
machine once it is running.
9. Operator should concentrate on the
work and not talk unnecessarily while
operating the machine.
10. Operator should have sufficient light
and ventilation for performing a particular
operation.

which you must take in order to avoid accidents
1. No one should disturb the operator while he is
operating a machine.
2. Tools are not to be used for any purpose other than
those they are designed for, i.e. spanners are not
hammers.
3. Files are not to be used without file handles.
4. Tools should be in good state (of repair/ condition).
5. Sharp end of scriber must always point downwards.

6. Chipping must always point towards screen
(away from other workers).
7. Goggles must always be worn when there is a
danger of flying particles of chippings, etc.
8. Always use a brush for cleaning chips, burrs and
not to flick with cloth.
9. Do not rub fingers, hands along work edges/
faces.
10. All accidents, major or minor, should be
reported to supervisors/ instructors/ superiors, etc.
SHOP FLOOR SAFETY
1. The shop floor should be free from oil,
liquid of any kind or grease to avoid slipping
hazard.
2. Shop floor should be clean and clear at all
times to avoid accidents.
3. The tools and work should be kept in
position after completion of each work, to
avoid toe or foot injury.
4. Store materials and finished products
should be properly handled by proper
handling equipment to avoid tripping
5. Tools should be kept in safe position when
not in use.
