ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

The Business Simulation module allows you the freedom to set up, run, and close down your
own business in a finite period of time on a project-managed basis. While it is expected that
a small cohort will engage with one business, this is not a hard and fast rule if there is a
compelling reason for more than one business to be created.

This may be because of different experiences, an innovative approach, talents, and skills.

To assess the learning outcomes for this module, you are asked to complete the following:

1. Assessment 1 – LO1 Multiple Choice Test (20%)

You will complete a short test with 15 multiple choice questions. This should take no
more than 30 minutes.
The test will be conducted in the classroom, under exam conditions.

2. Submit a group business plan – via Moodle Turnitin (LO2)

All participants are expected to contribute to a section or sections. A minimum of
1000 words overall, but no real limit for a comprehensive plan where many sections
and appendices may be submitted. The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate
your ability to develop a comprehensive business plan for a hypothetical business
operating within either the ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY or RETAIL INDUSTRY. This task
aims to assess your strategic thinking, planning skills, and the application of key
concepts covered in the BSP module.

3. Write an individual blog for upload via Moodle Turnitin (LO3)

In this assessment-2 , students are required to write a 500-word original blog post, not
copied from other sources, on the same business on which they created the Business
Plan in Assessment 1. Focusing on the distinct roles of leaders and managers in
business, as outlined in Learning Outcome 3. This blog should not only define and
differentiate between leadership and management but also delve into their unique
roles, responsibilities, and impacts on organizational culture and decision-making.
Students must incorporate personal experiences or observations to illustrate these
differences.

4. Individual Reflection – Via Moodle Turnitin (LO4)

Using Kolb’s Reflective Model model of reflection, reflect on the journey you have
taken and your contribution to the creation and success (or otherwise!) of the
business on which you have created the Business plan (in assessment 1).

Maximum Word Length:

State the number of words used on the assignment front sheet. Diagrams, figures, and the
like are permitted without incurring a word penalty. A sliding scale of penalties for excess
length will be imposed according to the amount by which the limit has been exceeded.

PROVISIONAL SUBJECT TO EXTERNAL EXAMINER APPROVAL

1-10% excess no penalty

11-20% excess 10% reduction in the mark
21-30% excess 20% reduction in the mark
31%+ excess the work will be capped at a pass

NB: None of the above penalties will be used to change your mark from one that is above the
pass mark to one that is below the pass mark. Therefore, the maximum penalty for exceeding
the word limit will be a reduction to a pass grade.
Note: Title, reference list, appendices, tables (succinct with bullet points), graphs and figures
used within the main body of the report are excluded from the word count.
