Gain Attention

Volleyball is an all-round easy game to get involved in, its

simple requirements are a ball, a net and players to form two
teams with an equal number of players on both sides, who will
compete against each other. Often played between family and
friends, be it for fun or a wager to make it more exciting, you
can have a great time playing this game. It can also be thrilling
to watch, as the game cannot finish in a draw. This can happen
in some other sports and while sometimes this may seem to be
a fair outcome, it can be disappointing not to see a winner.

Segment Title 1 History, Facilities and Equipment of
Volleyball

Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players

are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by
grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized
rules.

History of Volleyball

● Volleyball was first developed by William G. Morgan, after

graduation from Springfield College in Massachusetts in
1895.
● William Morgan took a position as physical director of the
Holyoke Young Men’s Christian Association.
● The main activity was basketball, a relatively strenuous
sport for the businessmen who used facilities of the
gymnasium. Some older men did not like it because of the
roughness of the game.
● In 1896 at a YMCA Conference at Springfield College. Mr.
Morgan publicized a new game.
● The game was introduced as “Mintonette” but after
watching the game, a faculty member of Springfield
College, Dr, Alfred T. Halsted, recommended the name be
changed to volleyball.
● By 1912, several rule changes has been made. Volleyball
became popular schools colleges, play grounds and the
armed forces.
● 1964, the game volleyball was introduced in and became
an Olympic sport during the Tokyo Olympic.

Facilities and Equipment

1. Volleyball- is made of Leather or

Synthetic Leather, have a circumference
of 65-67 cm, a weight of 292g and inside
pressure of 0.30-0.32 kg.
2. Court-
● Dimension- the playing court is
9m wide and 18m long (9x18)
and is surrounded by a free zone
3m wide on all sides.
● Playing Surface-the playing
surface is flat and light color. For
FIVB, world and official
competitions, only a wooden or
synthetic surface is allowed.
White color are required for the
lines. Other color are required for the playing court and
free zone.
● Line Markings- All lines on the court are 5cm wide and a
light color different from the color of the floor.

3. Net- The height or Top of the net

for the men’s competition is 2.43
m and for the women’s is 2.24 m,
and 9.50 to 10 meters long and
the net is made of black mesh.

4. Antennae- These are vertical

flexible rods attached to the
opposite side of the net at the points
the net the sidelines. An antennae is
1.80 meters (5 feet 11 inches) in
length, and the top 80 cm (32
inches) extends above the net and is
marked with 10cm (4inch) stripes of contrasting color,
preferably red and white.

Segment Title 2 Volleyball Positions and Basic Skills

Front Row: Hitters and Blockers

● Rightside Hitter - This position is normally played by the

setter if there are two setters playing.

● Middle Blocker - This hitter is normally tall and able to

block the other teams’ spikes.

● Outside Hitter - This hitter is not necessarily tall, but

powerful.

Back Row

● Setter - In volleyball, the setter plays the role of “setting”

the ball into the correct area so that the hitter can make a
clear and effective hit/spike. The setter usually takes the
second hit so that a play consists of a pass, set, and then a
spike.

● Libero - The libero is a defensive specialist. This player

typically wears the same jersey but is opposite the color
that the entire team is wearing. This is to indicate to the
referees that he/she is the libero. The libero has special
substitution privileges and is preferred to receive the
team’s hit/spike.

Basic Skills

1. Serve
● It is the attempt to drive the ball into the opponent's
court.
● There are 2 basic serve: underhand serve and
overhand serve.

Underhand Serve Overhand Serve

2.

Pass
● The ability to prevent the ball from touching one's
court by bumping or passing the ball.

3. Set

which a ball is
directed to a
point where a
player can spike

the ball over the
net into the
opposing court
effectively and
aggressively.

5. Block
● An action taken by players by standing or jumping at
the front of the net to stop or alter an opponent's
attack.

6. Dig
● The attempt by a
team to properly
handle the
opponent's serve or
any form of attack.

Synthesis
Here are the module’s key ideas:

● Volleyball was first developed by William G. Morgan, after

graduation from Springfield College in Massachusetts in
1895.
● Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players
are separated by a net.
● 1964, the game volleyball was introduced in and became
an Olympic sport during the Tokyo Olympic.
● Passing is simply getting the ball to someone else on your
team after it’s been served or hit over the net by the
opposing team.
● Spiking is the act of slamming the ball in a downward
motion across the volleyball net to the other team’s side of
the court.
● Blocking is another important skill, although it’s probably
the most expendable of the fundamentals. Still, it adds a
great dimension to the game, keeping the other team on
their toes, so to speak. By timing it right, you can jump up
and deflect or block the opponent’s attack before it even
crosses the volleyball net, which can take them by surprise
and give your team an easy point.
● Digging is a defensive maneuver in volleyball that can
save your team from an offensive spike or attack.
● Set is a tactical skill in which a ball is directed to a point
where a player can spike it in the opponent's court.
● The setter is the main contributor to the offense of the
volleyball team. One of the requirements of the setter is
having a delicate touch to set the ball perfectly for one of
the attacking players.
● The outside hitter is also known as the left-side hitter and
is the lead attacker in the offensive strategy.
● Also known as the right-side hitter, these players need to
be a perfect balance of both offense and defense.
● The middle blocker, sometimes known as the middle hitter,
is the tallest player on the volleyball team.
● The libero can become confusing for non-volleyball
players. They can only play on the back row of the court,
and because of this, are the ideal person to receive a hit
from the opposite team.
