I. The Problem

The deficiency in mentorship opportunities for Grade 12 STEM students at Santa

Fe National High School poses a significant challenge. With the absence of such
mentorship opportunities leaves students lacking of readiness to pursue scholarship
opportunities like the DOST scholarship. According to Midigo et al. (2018), mentorship
is not merely a professional relationship; it's a transformative bond that guides
individuals towards unlocking their full potential in their chosen career paths. For young
professionals just embarking on their careers, access to mentorship programs is crucial.
Effective mentorship offers numerous benefits, including higher professional
satisfaction, academic success among colleagues, personal growth, and development
(Gus & Garmel, 2004). Additionally, students may miss out on valuable networking
connections and insights into various career options that mentorship can provide. The
study by Liss and Wennberg (2021) underscores the positive impact of mentorship on
academic performance, highlighting how involvement in mentorship projects can lead to
higher grades and increased likelihood of selecting university prep programs.

Furthermore, the study by Kosoko-Lasaki et al. (2006) reinforces the value of

mentorship in guiding students through important career decisions, providing
constructive feedback, and offering emotional encouragement. By implementing
mentorship initiatives tailored to the needs of Grade 12 STEM students to be prepared
for qualifying exams like DOST Scholarship, we can address the deficiency in
preparedness for scholarships and provide the support necessary for their academic
and professional success. Such initiatives can foster motivation, engagement, and
confidence among students as they navigate their educational and career pathways.

In conclusion, addressing the lack of mentorship opportunities for Grade 12

STEM students at Santa Fe National High School is essential for their future success.
By establishing mentorship programs that provide guidance, support, and resources, we
can empower students to achieve their academic and professional goals, with their
pursuit of qualifying in scholarship examinations like the DOST Scholarship.

3
II. Goals and Objectives

This proposal aims to:

● Conduct a pre-test for each key subject to evaluate which topics should be
prioritized for review and additional explanation, ultimately enhancing the
learning experience and academic outcomes for students;

● Provide mentoring services among Grade 12 STEM students of Sante Fe

National High School with the key subjects of the DOST scholarship examination
such as Mathematics, Science, English and Abstract Reasoning in collaboration
with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) USJ-R scholars;

● Implement a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system among Grade 12

STEM students of Sante Fe National High School by providing weekly pre-test
and post-test assessments to track student progress effectively; and

● Assist students’ requirements for the DOST application.

III. Project Description

The "ScholarShape" project proposes an Academic Mentorship Initiative aimed

at bolstering the preparedness of Grade 12 STEM students at Santa Fe National High
School for the DOST scholarship exams. The initiative will bring together DOST
Scholars from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) as mentors, in
collaboration with the school's faculty, to provide tutoring refreshers in key subjects such
as Math, English, Science, and Abstract Reasoning. Through this collaborative effort,
students will receive targeted support to enhance their understanding and proficiency in
these subjects crucial for success in the scholarship exams.

Scheduled to take place on November 3, 9, 16, and 23, the mentorship sessions
will be conducted face-to-face at the school premises of Santa Fe National High School
(SFNHS), F. Duarte Street, Santa Fe, Cebu. Moreover, on November 30, 2024, the
assistance for processing the applications of the papers of the aspiring scholars, as well
as the closing program will commence. By leveraging the expertise of DOST Scholars
and the guidance of SFNHS faculty, the initiative aims to create a dynamic learning
environment, empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in
the DOST scholarship exams and pursue their academic aspirations with confidence.

4
IV. People Involved / Community

a) Beneficiaries
The 75 Grade 12 STEM students of Santa Fe National High School are the
primary beneficiaries of the academic mentorship initiative, aimed at preparing them for
the highly competitive DOST scholarship exam. According to the statistics provided by
the DOST, only 9,776 out of 79,585 examinees qualifying in the 2023 DOST-SEI
Undergraduate Scholarship Examination were able to pass. This intense competition
makes it crucial for students to be well-prepared academically to stand a chance of
getting selected. Additionally, the school's data shows a consistent trend of low pass
rates for the DOST scholarship, with only one student qualifying in 2023, and a total of
12 students qualifying across all batches from 2015 to 2023. The scholars emphasize
that the lack of mentorship and preparation for the qualifying exams is a significant
obstacle for students. They highlight that students often struggle to refresh topics in key
subjects that are part of the exam, which makes it even harder for them to pass.

b) Mentors and Facilitators

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholars from the University
of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) volunteer as mentors and facilitators, contributing to the
development of future STEM leaders while gaining valuable teaching experience. The
Santa Fe National High School (SFNHS) faculty serves as facilitators and coordinators,
ensuring the smooth implementation of the program and tailoring activities to meet
students' specific needs.

5
V. Budget Proposal

The budget for this project includes resources and logistical support. This encompasses
snacks and packed lunches for facilitators and speakers, review materials such as bond
papers, and transportation fees for speakers. Snacks are also provided for facilitators
and students for the whole initiative on November 3, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2024. The
finances for this project will be from sponsorships and funds from the DOST sa USJ-R
organization.

VI. Proposed Solution and Evaluation

The deficiency in mentorship opportunities for Grade 12 STEM students at Santa

Fe National High School has been identified as a significant obstacle to their readiness
for scholarship exams, particularly the DOST scholarship. To address this issue, the
proposed solution is the implementation of the "ScholarShape" project, an Academic
Mentorship Initiative designed to provide targeted support and guidance to students
aiming to excel in the DOST scholarship exams.

1. Pre-Test Assessment:

● Conduct a pre-test for each key subject (Mathematics, Science, English,

and Abstract Reasoning) to evaluate students' proficiency and identify
areas requiring additional focus.

● Analyze the pre-test results to prioritize topics for review and additional
explanation, ensuring that mentorship sessions are tailored to students'
specific needs.

● An item analysis of the pre-test will be performed to identify specific

topics or types of questions where students exhibit weaknesses.

● The results of the item analysis will be shared with the students to provide
clarity on areas needing improvement.

2. Mentoring Sessions:

● Collaborate with DOST Scholars from the University of San Jose Recoletos
(USJ-R) to mentor the students.

● Schedule face-to-face mentorship sessions on November 3, 9, 16, and 23

at Santa Fe National High School premises. The Mentorship Sessions
include reviews on key subjects such as :

a) English - Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Usage, Vocabulary,

Literary Analysis

b) Mathematics - Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Probability

and Statistics

c) Science - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental

Science, Scientific Method

8
d) Abstract Reasoning - Pattern Recognition, Spatial Reasoning, Logical
Deduction, Analogies, Series Completion, Visual Perception

3. Monitoring and Evaluation:

● The facilitators and mentors will provide weekly pre-test and post-test
assessments to track student progress effectively.

● The assessment results will be used to adjust mentorship strategies and

ensure continuous improvement.

4. Closing Program and Application Assistance:

● On November 30, 2024, the facilitators will provide further assistance with
processing and preparing necessary documents for applications of the
aspiring scholars for the DOST scholarship.

● A closing program for the Academic Mentorship Initiative will also

commence to conclude the event.
