BACS Riyadh Metro Project
Amtech Cable Design Guidelines

1 Purpose of Document
This document has been produced to provide design guidance for the Arup electrical team for the Amtech
cable design on the Riyadh Metro Project.
It should be used for internal design purposes only and should not be issued externally.

2 Clarifications
Only general inputs are provided. Project specific information such as lengths and loads should be included
by the station design teams.
Always set the inputs as you would like them to be and let the software tell you where these inputs are
failing and need to be changed. Do not set any cable size setting to auto.
All cable types are still to be finally agreed with the Client. The cable types modelled using Amtech may
not be 100% correct. Where different to what we are actually going to specify we’ll need to highlight the
differences in a schedule.
MCC final circuits should be fully modelled.
At 100% design stage, all final circuits should be fully modelled.
The guidelines within this document are presented in the following order;
1) Voltage Drop Allowances
2) Transformer Inputs
3) Main Busbar Inputs
4) Main Switchboard Inputs
5) Interconnecting Busbar Inputs
6) Generator Inputs
7) Submain to DP/EDPs
8) Submain to DB Inputs
a. Small Power Final Circuit Loads
b. Lighting Final Circuit Loads
9) Submain to MCC inputs
10) Submain to Chiller Inputs
11) Submain to Fire Pump Inputs
12) Submain to Lifts/Escalators Inputs
13) Submain to Large Motor Load Inputs
14) Submain to PFC inputs
15) Submain to CBS inputs

3 Voltage Drop Allowances

The following voltage drop allowances should be used for the Riyadh electrical design.
The overall voltage drop limit should be met under all operational scenarios i.e. running on mains, running
on mains when operating both switchboards on a single transformer, running on generator (single gen worst
case) and running on central battery inverter.
As long as the voltage drop from the source to the final load is below the overall limit then there can be
some flexibility on the different cable section voltage drops.

contemplate using a motor rated circuit breaker which has only short circuit protection. This will allow the
cable to the motor to be reduced in size.

17.1 CBS inputs

The UPS component in Amtech is difficult to implement correctly.

As a result of this we have used the source component instead to represent the CBS operating under battery
supply conditions.

Central Battery Inverter as represented by a Source

VOLTAGE
Voltage: 400V
Frequency: 60Hz
Supply Type: Private Supply
User Defined: Voltage Drop Limit 4% [recent Client request from 5% to match Saudi regs]

FAULT CONDITIONS
Phase & Earth Fault Current (kA): Use 3 x full load current of CBS
i.e. 60kVA=87A => 87Ax3= 261A
The CB inverter should be able to supply 300% for long enough to trip the submain & final circuit breakers.

PROTECTION
Match the CBS protection device to the protection device of the submain to the CBS.
You have to include some device in here to make the program work but under battery operation, this device
will not actually exist. The cable from the central battery inverter to the central battery output switchboard
will be protected using electronic fuses within the CBS. The inclusion of the above protective device will
give rise to an error in Amtech, which can be ignored.
