How to generate DEM from Google Earth

Open Google Earth, draw a boundary for your site.

Go to main menu>new polygon> draw the boundary polygon while keeping the dialogue box open.

Go to main menu>edit path> draw path within site boundary keeping the edit path dialogue box open.

Try to cover as much area as possible. When you are done click ok.
In the left pane a new layer will be added named “points.” Right click on the layer>save as .kml layer.

Go to GPS visulizer by typing the following URL:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation

Choose .kml, convert& add elevation, define output as Plain text. Then Download the data and save it in
a folder created in your name. it will be a .txt file.

Now open excel and import the .txt data in excel. Your excel spread sheet should have 4 columns like
below:
Now open ArcMap> main menu>file>add data>add XY data. It will open a Add XY Data dialogue box. Fill
up the box like following and for coordinate system choose GCS. Go to Edit>world>WGS 1984.click ok.
The points will appear in your ArcMap browser.
Now you have to convert it to shape file. Right click on point layer >Data>Export Data> define the path
name and make sure you choose shape file in the data type option.

Now to generate DEM go to Spatial Analyst> interpolation>topo to raster. Choose Alt under Field and
choose point elevation under Type.
Click OK. It will create a DEM.
