Linear functions

In these exercises the use of a calculator is not allowed.

1 Equation of a line
(1) Determine the equation of the line through the points (5, −1) and (2, 3). Is this line
increasing or decreasing? Make a sketch.

(2) Determine the equation of the line through (−4, 2) with slope −3. Is this line
increasing or decreasing? Make a sketch.

(3) Determine the equation of the line through the points (−1, 4) and (−1, 5). Make a
sketch.

2 Mutual points
Determine the mutual points of
(a) the line with equation 5x + 3y = 2 and the line with equation x − y = 6.

(b) the line with equation 2x + 4y = 10 and the line with equation y = (5 − x)/2.

(c) the line with equation y = 2(x − 5) and the line with equation 2x − y = 13.

(d) the line with equation y = 4x−5 and the line through the point (3, −5) with slope 2.

3 Parallel and perpendicular lines

(1) Determine the equation of the line through (1, −1) which is parallel to the line with
equation 5x + 4y = 9.

(2) Determine the equation of the line through (1, −1) which is perpendicular to the
line with equation 5x + 4y = 9.

(c) no mutual points, because parallel lines
(d) intersection point (−3, −17)
(e) intersection point (19, 4)

3) (1) 5x + 4y = 1
(2) 4x − 5y = 9
