Part Modeling Project: Automated Mechanical Assembly

Project Overview

Design a multi-part mechanical system, such as a conveyor system or robotic arm,

with around 25 components. The project involves creating detailed models and assembly,

and can be done using AutoCAD, CATIA, and SolidWorks.

Project Components: Conveyor System

1. Conveyor Belt

2. Rollers (5-6 parts)

3. Motor Housing

4. Drive Shaft

5. Idler Shaft

6. Pulley System (2-3 parts)

7. Support Frame

8. Guide Rails (2-3 parts)

9. Motor

10. Bearings (4-6 parts)

11. Adjustable Tensioning Mechanism

12. Legs/Support Stands

13. End Caps

14. Electrical Housing

Subassemblies for Conveyor System

- Motor and Pulley Subassembly: Motor, pulley, and drive shaft.

- Roller and Support Subassembly: Rollers, bearings, and idler shaft.

Project Components: Robotic Arm

1. Base

2. Arm Sections (3-4 parts)

3. Joints (4-5 parts)

4. End-Effector/Gripper

5. Actuators (3-4 parts)

6. Rotating Base

7. Cables and Wiring

8. Power Supply

9. Control Panel

10. Sensors (2-3 parts)

11. Brackets and Mounts

12. Frame Components

Subassemblies for Robotic Arm

- Arm and Joint Subassembly: Arm parts, joints, and actuators.

- Gripper and Sensor Subassembly: Adding functionality to the arm.

Tools for Modeling

- AutoCAD: For 2D drafting, layout, and detailing (base frame, supports).

- SolidWorks: Best for part modeling, assembly, and simulations.

- CATIA: Ideal for complex parts, surface modeling, and assembly management.
Project Workflow

1. Sketching: Start with rough 2D sketches (AutoCAD).

2. Part Modeling: Design individual parts (SolidWorks/CATIA).

3. Assembly: Assemble parts and apply constraints (SolidWorks/CATIA).

4. Simulation: Simulate motion for robotic arm or belt movement.

5. Detailing: Add part details like materials, finishes, and GD&T.

6. Rendering: Create photorealistic renderings of the assembly.

Benefits of This Project

- Skill Development: Learn to design systems with multiple parts and complex assemblies.

- Showcase: Demonstrates your ability to design, assemble, and simulate mechanical systems.

- Portfolio: Adds value to your CAD portfolio for job interviews.
