PROGRAMME: Mechanical Diploma II – Conic Sections.

1. Find an equation for the circle with a diameter endpoints at (9,-4) and (-1,0).
2. Find an equation for the circle centered at (1,-5) and tangent to the line 3x  4 y  8
3. Find the equation of the line that is tangent to the circle x 2  y 2  2 x  3 y  12  0 at the
point (4,1)
4. Find the equation of the circle which has tangents, 3x  4 y  34 at the point 10, 1

and 4 x  3 y  12 at the point  3,0  .


5. Find the equation of the circle that passes through the origin and has its center at
(3, 4)
6. Find the equations of the circles that have their centers on the line 2 x  3 y  10 and
tangent to both axes
7. Find the equation of the circle that has its center (2, 3) and its tangent to the line
x  y  3
8. A circle has equation x 2  y 2  6 x  2 y  6  0 . For this circle, find;
i) The coordinates of the centre
ii) The radium
iii) The coordinates where it crosses the x -axis.
9. Find the vertex, focus, axis of symmetry and directrix of each of the following parabolas,
and sketch their graphs
i) y   x2  6x  9
ii) 32 x  y  4 x 2  62
iii) y 2  6 y  12 x  21  0
10. An arch in a memorial park, having a parabolic shape has a height of 25 feet and a base
width of 30 feet. Find an equation which models this shape, using the x -axis to
represent the ground. State the focus and directrix.
11. Find the vertices, the endpoints of the minor axis, and the foci, lengths of the major and
minor diameters, the eccentricity and sketch the conic;

12. Write an equation for the ellipse with vertices (4,0) and (-2,0) and foci (3,0) and (-1,0).
13. The following non-degenerated conics are rotated out of standard position. In each part
rotated the coordinate axes to remove the xy -term. Name the conic and give its
equation in the rotated coordinate system.

iii) 2 x2  3xy  y 2 10  0
iv) 11x 2  24 xy  4 y 2  15  0
14. For the hyperbola with equation 16( y  3) 2  4( x  4) 2  1 . Find;
i) The coordinates of the centre
ii) The eccentricity
iii) The equations of the foci
15. Find the vertices, the foci, and the equations of the asymptotes, and sketch the
hyperbola of the following hyperbola;
i) 4 y 2  x 2  12 .
ii) x2  6 x  3 y 2  0
i) y 2  8 y  x 2  2 x  14  0
16. The equation of a conic is expressed parametrically as x  2  sec , y  3  tan  .
Express the equation of the conic in Cartesian form. Hence find the eccentricity of the
conic.
17. An ellipse has its foci on the y -axis and its center at the origin. The distance between
the foci is 6 and the major axis is of length 10. Find its equation.
18. Describe the conics and find Rectangular (Cartesian) equations for the conic sections
below;

19. In mountainous areas, reception of radio and television is sometimes poor. Consider an

at an  x0 , 0  . What is the closest the receiver can be to the hill so that the reception is
not obstructed?
