Turkmen five thousand years ago. According to historical data, the color
of Oguz Han's flag was green. It was used to symbolize spring, revival and
rising, unity of time, life and earth. Since then, the heirs of Oguz have
preserved the green flag. Through many years, the flag of a Turkmen na-
tion has changed its appearance. However, since Turkmenistan gained its
Independence, the Turkmen flag has been the same. The green color rep-
resents unity and revival. The crescent symbolizes a clear sky and hope
for the future. The five stars stand
for five welayats and five human
senses: light, sound, smell, touch
and balance. Five carpet designs

Re: Holidays.
Hello, Kerim.
Thank you for your letter. I have been just great. It is almost Christmas time.
I love holidays and presents!
Have I told you about holidays in Great Britain?
There are a few holidays in our country. They are, New Year's Day, Good Fri-
day, Easter, May Day, Christmas and Boxing Day. The most famous one is
Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present.
They want to say ”Thank you” for British help in the World War II. It is a big
Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. Thousands of people come
to look at it.
At home, we decorated Christmas tree together as a family. We hang mistletoe
over the door. Many people believe that mistletoes bring good luck. My parents
put presents into stockings or arrange larger ones around the Christmas tree.
We open our presents in the morning of 25 December.
Most important meal on December 25th is Christmas dinner. Christmas din-
ner is roast turkey with carrots, potatoes, peas and Brussels sprouts. After the
turkey, there is Christmas pudding.
For British children Christmas means pantomimes, too. The pantomime is
a traditional Christmas show at the stocking - for example: ”Puss in Boots”,
”The Sleeping Beauty”, ”Cinderella” and ”Little Red Riding Hood”.
On Christmas Day at three o'clock in the afternoon, the Queen makes a speech
on radio and TV. It is ten minutes long. Everyone gathers in front of TV.

My heart's in the Highlands
(by Roberts Burns)

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth ;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains, high-cover'd with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Hey there, Emily!
How have you been so far? I am OK. I am on my winter break right now.
It is cold. It even snowed a couple times. But, it all melted so fast
I did not get to enjoy it. It does not usually snow here heavily as it does in
Britain. It makes me sad, too. I have never gone to skiing with my friends!
In my hometown, Turkmenbashy, winters are cold and summers are
extremely hot. The weather is pretty nice in the beginning of spring and
in the end of fall.

year is summer. I go swimming, fishing and camping with my class-

King of the Pumpkins
By Chris Rose
Deep in the middle of the woods”, said my mother “is the place where
the King of the Pumpkins lives.”
“But pumpkins live in fields, not in forests”, I said to my mother.
She would not listen to me. “I'm telling you”, she said, “the King of the
Pumpkins lives in the middle of the woods, and the woods that he lives in
are the woods right next to our house”. She pointed with her hand to the
woods that were, in fact, just outside the window behind our house. “He
doesn't live in a field like the other pumpkins” continued Mother, “because
he's not an ordinary pumpkin. He's the King Pumpkin”.
I decided to go and find the King of the Pumpkins.
I set off with Mog the cat into the woods to look for the King of the
Pumpkins.
“Do you think he's real?” I asked Mog.
“Don't know” said the cat.
We walked on into the forest. The trees got taller and taller and
taller. The path got narrower and narrower and narrower.
93
Eventually, we got to the middle of the forest and there was the
King of the Pumpkins.
He was quite tall and had legs and arms made from sticks. He was
wearing an old black coat. His head was a pumpkin. His head was the
biggest pumpkin I had ever seen.

A Clever Answer
One morning, when the mighty lion was just waking up, he yawned
a great big yawn. He roared a great big roar to let all of the other ani-
mals know that he was awake. You see, the lion was the king of all the
animals. "Oh my," said the lioness. "You have morning breath!" The lion
roared in dismay. "I am the king! I am perfect!" As he walked along he
met a donkey. "Tell me true, do I have morning breath?" he roared into
the donkey's face. "Whew!" said the donkey. "Indeed you do." The lion
was insulted and immediately killed the donkey. Next the lion met a
leopard and asked him the same question. Knowing that the lion had
just killed the donkey because of his answer, the leopard replied, "Oh
great sire, your breath is as sweet as the morning dew. Your breath is
as delightful as the finest flower. Your breath is finer than the finest
perfume."
Again the lion in anger. "You are making fun of me, the mighty
king!" So he killed the leopard too. The fox had seen everything that
happened. The lion turned to him and asked, "Fox, do I have morning
breath?" Now everyone knows that a fox is a clever animal. The fox took
a deep breath and with a slight cough he replied, "Oh mighty king, I am

Once a fox was chased by a tiger in a forest. He ran as fast as he
could in order to save his life. But suddenly, he fell into a well which was
covered with shrubs that obstructed his vision, as he was running. He
could not come out of the well. Now the fox knew that death had been
waiting for him in that well. He was sad.
Soon the fox heard a goat bleating nearby. He shouted loudly from
inside the well to call the goat. The goat came near the well and asked
him, "Friend, what are you doing there in the well?"
The fox said, "Friend, have you not heard that a drought is soon
coming in the country, and there will be no water anywhere? So I've
come here to enjoy the sweet water of this well. The water is so tasty
that I do not even feel hungry. Why don't you join me, friend? Just jump
into the well, and give me a pleasant company! "
The foolish goat believed the fox and agreed to join her friend. As
she jumped, the clever fox placed one of his feet on her horn and escaped
from the well. Now the poor goat was inside the well. She cried, "Friend,
why do you leave me here alone? Come back."
The fox said, "Friend, you should have looked before you had leaped
into the well to see if it was possible for you to come out of it. You did not

Once two merchants lost a camel. They met a traveler and asked
him if he had seen it. The man replied he had not. "But was your camel
blind in the right eye?" said he to them.
"Yes, he was", replied the merchants. "Was it lame in one left foot?"
the man asked again. "Certainly it was", said the merchants.
"Was its front tooth missing?" said he to them. "Indeed ", said
they. "Was it loaded with honey on one side and with wheat on the
other?" "That is just how it was loaded," they answered. "Please, take
us to it."
"But I have not seen your camel," said the man "and I do not know
where it is". The merchants got angry and said "Then how could you tell
us so exactly everything about our camel?" "That is my secret", said the
man.
The merchants took him to the king who asked him where the camel
was. The man replied that he had not seen it. At this the king asked him
how he knew so much about it.

152
The man answered that the camel had eaten grass only on the left
side of the path. So he knew that it was blind.
The marks of its one left foot were faint. This showed that the camel
was lame. While eating grass, it had left a little turf in the middle.

The Thirsty Crow
One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water.
For a long time, she could not find any. She felt very weak, almost giving
up hope.
Suddenly, she saw a water jug below her. She flew straight down to
see if there was any water inside. Yes, she could see some water inside
the jug!
153
The crow tried to push her head into the jug. Sadly, she found that
the neck of the jug was too narrow. Then she tried to push the jug down
for the water to flow out. She found that the jug was too heavy.
The crow thought hard for a while. Then looking around her, she saw
some pebbles. She suddenly had a good idea. She started picking up the
pebbles one by one, dropping each into the jug. As more and more peb-

for the crow to drink. Her plan had worked!

The Wolf and the Lamb
A lamb was grazing with a flock of sheep one day. She soon found
some sweet grass at the edge of the field. Father and father she went,
away from the others.
She was enjoying herself so much that she did not notice a wolf
coming nearer to her. However, when it pounced on her, she was quick
to start pleading, "Please, please don't eat me yet. My stomach is full of
grass. If you wait a while, I will taste much better."
154
The wolf thought that was a good idea, so he sat down and waited.
After a while, the lamb said, "If you allow me to dance, the grass in my
stomach will be digested faster. ” Again the wolf agreed.
While the lamb was dancing, she had a new idea. She said, "Please
take the bell from around my neck. If you ring it as hard as you can, I
will be able to dance even faster."
The wolf took the bell and rang it as hard as he could. The shepherd
heard the bell ringing and quickly sent his dogs to find the missing lamb.
The barking dogs frightened the wolf away and saved the lamb's life.

Sugar and Spice
It was Saturday, and Mindy was getting ready for her birthday party.
In just three hours, all of her friends would arrive with presents and ex-
citement. Every year, Mindy and her mom made a cinnamon cake fresh
on the day of her birthday party, and Mindy though this year would be
no different. Excited, she waited for her mom in the kitchen.

155
Mindy's mother came into the kitchen and took her apron from a
hook on the wall. Instead of putting it on, though, she lifted it over Min-
dy's head. Surprised, Mindy stood as her mom tied the strings of the
apron behind her.
"Mindy, I think you're old enough to mix the batter yourself this
year. I'm sure you can do it. Remember what we say?"
"Yes…Baking is just a little sugar and a little spice."
"That's right," said Mindy's mom. "Now, go ahead and start. I'm go-
ing to go blow up the balloons. "With that, she left Mindy alone in the
kitchen.
Maybe her mom was right, maybe there wasn't much to it. Carefully,
Mindy measured out the ingredients and poured them into a big bowl.
Carefully, she mixed the batter until it was perfectly smooth. Carefully,
she poured the batter into the cake pan. Then she called to her mom.
"It's ready to go into the oven," Mindy said. Her mom turned on the
oven, set the temperature, and popped the pan into the oven. Mindy had
actually done it!
When the cake came out, she thought, something seemed wrong.
Mindy tried to poke it with a toothpick, just as her mother always did. The
toothpick wouldn't go through. The cake was almost as hard as a rock!
"I did exactly what I was supposed to," Mindy moaned. "I was so
careful! I didn't put the eggs in until last, and I measured the baking
soda exactly.”
"Baking soda? Oh, dear. That's the problem. You were supposed to
use baking powder."
Mindy began try cry. "I'm sorry, mom. I tried so hard."
Mindy's mom gave her a big hug. "I'm the one who's sorry. I expected
too much and was hard on. I guess you could say I used too little sugar
and too much spice!"
Mindy laughed, and her mom laughed, too.
"Now, let's try again", said Mindy's mom. "This time, we'll do it to-
gether."
