LEARNING ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Week Covered: Week 8

Learning Competency: Visualizes circumference of a circle; measures

circumference of a circle using appropriate tools; and finds the circumference of a
circle (M5ME-IIIh-67-68, i-70)

Objectives: After completing this self-learning activity sheet, you should be

able to:
1. visualize circumference of a circle;
2. measure circumference of a circle; and
3. find the circumference of a circle.

Materials:

notebooks, pad paper and ball pen

Directions: Use the figure below to answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Name the following:

a. the circle
b. 3 radii
c. diameter

2. Recall that a radius is one-half of the diameter.

a. If the diameter BD = 10 cm, find radius BA.
b. If the radius AD = 4 cm, how long is BD?

2
Let us recall that the distance around a polygon is called a perimeter.
What do you call the distance around the circle?

Study the figure below.

The distance around the circle is

diameter called a circumference.

Circumference

The diameter or radius is related to the circumference of a circle. Hence

let us recall the relationship between a diameter and a radius.

 A radius is ½ of its diameter. In other words, a diameter is

equivalent to 2 radii. Therefore,
If the diameter is 8 cm, then the radius is 4 cm.
If the diameter is 12 cm, then its diameter is 6 cm.
If the radius is 5 cm, then its diameter is 10 cm.

Using a tape measure or other measuring tool, we can manually find the
circumference of a circle. However, instead of measuring the circumference
manually, we can use the formula.

The table below will guide us on how we derive the formula in finding the
circumference of any circles.

5 cm 3 cm 4 cm 5 cm

Circle Diameter Circumference

A 2 cm 6.28 cm
B 3 cm 9.42 cm
C 4 cm 12.56 cm
D 5 cm 15.70 cm

3
Does the circumference of the circle increase as its diameter increases?
We have noticed that as the diameter increases, the circumference also
increases.

What do you think is the relationships that exist between the

circumference and the diameter of the circle?

Let us divide the circumference by its diameter.

= = 3.14

= = 3.14

= = 3.14

= = 3.14

By dividing the circumference by its diameter of any circular objects, you

will get an approximate value of 3.1416.

Hence, for any circle, the ratio of the circumference to the diameter is
about 3.14 or 22/7.

This number is represented by the Greek letter  (read as pi), hence

 = 3.14.
Since circumference divided by diameter is equal to , then we can find
the circumference (C) by multiplying  and diameter (d).

Cd= 
Multiplication is the
C=xd inverse of division

C = d

For any circle, the radius (r) is one-half the diameter.

r = ½ x d or r = 2 x r

So, C =  x d

=  x (2r)

C = 2r

4
To find the measure of the circumference of a circle, we can use the formula

C = d, or C = 2r

where, C is the circumference.

 is pi
d is diameter

r is radius

To make it easy for you,

 if the given is diameter, use C = d

 If the given is radius, use C = 2r

Study the illustrative examples that follow.

Use  = 3.14 to find the circumference of a circle.

1. d = 10 cm 3. r = 5 cm

2. d = 4.5 cm 4. r = 8 mm

Solutions:

1.) C = d 2.) C = d

= 3.14 (10 cm) = 3.14 (4.5 cm)

C = 31.4 cm C = 14.13 cm

3.) C = 2r 4.) C = 2r

= 2(3.14) (5 cm) = 2(3.14) (8 mm)

C = 31.4 cm C = 50.24 mm
5. Find the circumference of the circle below.

Solution: C = d
= 3.14(1.5 dm)
C = 4.71 dm

5
Directions: Answer the following activities on a separate sheet of paper.

A. Find the circumference of each circle. Use  = 3.14.

1. 2. 3.
d=7 cm
d= 2.5m
r=3 dm

B. Complete the table below. If the given is diameter find the radius and
circumference. If the given is radius, find the diameter and circumference. If
the given is circumference, find the radius and the diameter. The first item
is done for you.

Radius Diameter Circumference

1 4.5 m 9m 28.26 m
2 8 dm
3 20 mm
4 12.56 m
5 15 cm 94.20 cm

C. Match Column A with its corresponding circumference in Column B. Write

only the letter of your answer.

Column A Column B

1. d = 11 cm A. 43.96 cm

2. r = 7.5 cm B. 81.64 cm

3. d = 40 cm C. 34.54 cm

4. r = 13 cm D. 47.10 cm

5. d = 14 cm E. 40.82 cm

F. 125.60 cm
