Chapter 01 Fundamental Concepts of Fluids

1. Find the dynamic viscosity of fluid as shown in fig. [Ans= 21.23 Ns/m2]

2. Determine the bulk modulus of a liquid if the pressure of the liquid is increased from 70 N/cm 2 to
130 N/cm2. The volume of the liquid decreased by 0.15%. [Ans= 4*104 N/cm2]
3. A thin plate of area A is placed midway in gap of height h filled with a liquid of dynamic viscosity
μ1. The plate requires the force F to move with the constant uniform velocity v. The same gap is
consequently filled with another liquid of dynamic viscosity μ2 and the same plate is positioned at
a distance h/4 from one wall. Experiments indicated that for the same velocity v, the force required
was the same. Prove that μ1= (4/3) μ2.

4. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of an oil which is used for lubrication between a surface plane size
0.8m×0.8m and an inclined plane with angle of inclination 30°. The weight of the plate is 30kgf
and it slides down the inclined plane with a uniform velocity of 0.3m/s. Take the thickness of oil
film is 1.5mm. [Ans= 0.117 Ns/m2]

5. A square plate of size 2m×2m and weighing 500N slides down an inclined plane with a uniform
velocity of 1.5m/s. The inclined plane is laid on a grade of 20% and has an oil film of 1mm
thickness. Determine the viscosity of the oil. [Ans= 0.016 Ns/m2]

6. A circular disc of 30m diameter and 50N is kept in a inclined plane surface with a slope of 45° to
the horizontal. The space of 2mm between the disc and the inclined surface is filled with oil of
viscosity 1Ns/m2. What force will be required to pull the disc up the inclined plane surface at the
velocity 0.5m/s? [Ans= 176.749 KN]

7. A cylinder weighing 90N slides in a lubricated pipe as shown in fig below. The clearance between
the cylinder and the pipe is 0.025mm. If the cylinder is observed to decelerate at 0.6m/s2 when the
speed is 6m/s, find the viscosity of oil. [Ans= 0.0496 Ns/m2]
8. The velocity profile of a Newtonian fluid flowing over a fixed surface is approximated by
𝜋
u=𝑈 × sin 𝑦. Determine the shear stress in the fluid at y=h and at y=h/2. The viscosity of the

fluid is μ. [Ans= 0, ]

9. A cylinder contains a fluid at a gauge pressure of 360KN/m2. Express this pressure in terms
of a head of a) water and b) Mercury of Sp.Gr=13.6 (36.69,2.69)
What would be the absolute pressure in the cylinder if atmospheric pressure is 760mm of
Hg?

10. Determine the pressure difference between two points A and B in the fig. (10.22 KPa)

11. An oil and water manometer consists of a U-tube 4 mm diameter with both limbs vertical.
The right-hand limb is enlarged at its upper end to 20 mm diameter. The enlarged end
contains oil with its free surface in the enlarged portion and the surface of separation
between water and oil is below the enlarged end. The left-hand limb contains water only,
its upper end being open to the atmosphere.
When the right-hand side is connected to a cylinder of gas, the surface of separation is
observed to fall by 25 mm, but the surface of oil remains in the enlarged end. Calculate the
gauge pressure in the cylinder. Assume that the specific gravity of the water is 1.0 and that
of the oil 0.9.

12. Find the pressure difference between containers A and B shown in the figure. (82.63 KPa)
13. Two pipes convey toluene of specific gravity 0.875 and water respectively. Both the liquids
in the pipes are under pressure. The pipes are connected to a U-tube manometer and the
hoses connecting the pipes to the tubes are filled with corresponding liquids, Find the
difference in pressure in two pipes if the level of manometric liquid having a specific
gravity 1.25 is 2.25m higher in the right limb than the lower level of toluene in the left limb
of the manometer. (7357.5Pa)

14. Figure below shows a differential gage. X and Y are connected to two different sources of
pressure. With the equal pressure at X and Y, tops of kerosene columns stand at the
common level J-J and water at O-O. Points X and Y are at the same level. Find the
difference of pressure head between X and Y in mm of water if h is 0.3 m. Take the
reservoir cross-section 100 times that of glass tube. (6.54 mm of water)
15. A differential manometer is attached to a pipe as shown in figure. Calculate the manometric
height difference x, for pressure difference of 2.68 KPa. (18.828 mm)
