Breaking Down the Complex

Work of Teaching PBL (Project
Based Learning) Into
Manageable Chunks
Creating a product in the end is indeed the most effective
way to learn something. That is what is called Project Based
Learning (PBL). It is also different than the traditional
curriculum-based learning system that enforces students to
learn something day by day all planned out. The method also
instills the ability to work as a team on group projects that will
enhance their collaboration skills. The method is also
increasing students' motivation by providing a fun and
productive environment.

There is an association called STEAM which embraces the

goal to overcome barriers in applying PBL by breaking down
complex instructional methods into manageable components.
We can list and explain these components as such: The 5E
model of instructions: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate,
Evaluate.
Briefly, let's say we want to apply these steps on a topic
we want to teach to the students. As a teacher we are
engaging interests of students by activities, we are engaging
curiosity among them. After that we are creating a space and
roadmap for students to comfortably explore and to eliminate
curiosity by making research and inquiries. Then we are going
to explain what the topic actually is and enlighten them in the
field by giving the necessary information. In the continuation,
we are letting them apply the insights they gained by these
steps and create a basic product, or something related to that
on by themselves. This step is crucial for their understanding.
As a final step we are going to make students evaluate the
process they have accomplished. Important things to be aware
of based on the article:
1. Make students work as small groups: This will
enhance their collaboration, communication, and critical
thinking skills. By working in small groups, students can
share ideas, debate perspectives, and build on each
other’s strengths.
2. Real-World Applications: Applying real world relevant
projects can motivation and engagement by linking
classroom content to real-life situations.
