Graphs 1 – Part 1

10th Grade Maths

Week 3 - Lesson 2

Graph Reminder

A(xa,ya) We talk about x and y as being the

axes of that graph.

A point has coordinates on x and

y. Coordinates of the point A(xa,ya)
are A(6,6).

We need two points to create a

line and the relationship in between
x and y can be defined by y = mx + c

We can also use the coordinates of any two points of the line

A(x1,y1)

𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒
m= B(x2,y2)
ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑧𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 = ΔY = y2 – y1

Δ𝑌 𝑌2−𝑌1
m = Δ𝑥 = 𝑋2 −𝑋1 = ΔX = x2 – x1

Use of the gradient in the equation of the line y = mx + c
Another way to visualize it

16
Let's calculate the slope for these lines with the
coordinates

C(4,5)

____ 43 1
For BA , m = ? = 
62 4
____
For BC , m = 5  3  2  1
42 2

19
If we choose any two points of this line, is the
gradient going to change?
D

NO!

The gradient can be calculated from ANY two points on the line
What does this mean?
You can check using the two points AB, AC, CD or more… 20
Find the gradients of next 10 lines

Reminder: you need to pick any two points on the line. You can visualize a
triangle if it helps you

In ABD, we have m AD = 1/2 = AB / BD

 AB = m AD * BD = ½ * 20 = 10 m

AC = AB + BC = AB + h => h = AC – AB
h = 12 – 10 = 2 m

a. In ABC, we have m AC = 1/15 = AB / BC b. Let’s introduce h the total height.

 AB = m AC * BC = 1/15 * 90 = 6 m h = AB + A’B’ = 6 + 8 = 14 m

In A’B’C’, we have m A’C’ = 1/25 = A’B’ / B’C’ In DEF, mDEF = h / 420 = 14 / 420 = 1 / 30
 A’B’ = m A’C’ * B’C’ = 1/25 * 200 = 8 m

Practice Ex1* Q8 P36 - Correction

a. In ABC, we have m AB = 0.8 = AC / BC

 AC = m AB * BC = 0.8 * 5 = 4 m

4m
b. In ADC, we have m AD = -1.25 = AC / DC
 |DC| = AC / |m AD | = 4/ 1.25 = 3.2 m

5m BD is the length of the boat

BD = BC + CD = 5 + 3.2 = 8.2 m

65 –b

65 - a

You need to realize you need to insert some variables. Let’s introduce distances a and b.

Then we can insert 65 – b (upper right triangle) and 65 – a (lower left).

• For the upper right triangle: 3 = (65-b)/a => 3a = 65 –b

• For the lower left triangle: ½ = b / (65 –a) => a = 65 – 2b

You solve and get: a = 13 and b = 26 54
