Graphs 2

10th Grade Maths

Week 8 - Lesson 1

Note: use Powerpoint to open the file

Let's calculate the equation line for these lines

Reminder

y = 5x +4
The gradient is 5
The y-intercept is 4
Use of the gradient in the equation of the line y = mx +c

y = mx + c

gradient y-intercept

The line y = mx + c has a gradient of -3.

Find the equation of the line if we know A(2,1) is on the line

𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 𝑐
1 = −3 ∗ 2 + 𝑐 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 7
𝑐 = 7

Identify the Line
A. 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 3
B. 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 3
C. 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 3
D. 𝑦 = −3𝑥 − 3

1. The y-intercept must be positive, since it passes above the x-axis

2. The gradient must be positive the line goes from Q3 to Q1
Identify the Line
A. 𝑦 = 2
B. 𝑦 = −3
C. 𝑥 = 4
D. 𝑥 = −5

1. The line is vertical, so the gradient is undefined.

2. The line crosses the x axis to the left of the y axis.
Simultaneous Equations
Simultaneous equations are used when there are more than
one unknown.

The number of unknown variables has to be equal to the

number of equations.

Simultaneous equations can be solved graphically or

algebraically.
Identify the solution to the
graphed Simultaneous
Equations: (2, 5)
∗ 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 1
∗ 𝑦 = 9 − 2𝑥

A. (-1, 9)
B. (9, -1)
C. (2, 5)
D. (5, 2)
Identify the solution to the
graphed Simultaneous
Equations:

∗ 𝑦 = 5 − 2𝑥
∗ 𝑦 = −2𝑥
Simultaneous Equations - Conclusion
1. The solution to all simultaneous equations is the
point of intersection.

2. If simultaneous linear equations do not have a

solution, then those lines are parallel.

3. Parallel lines do not intersect.

4. Linear equations that are not parallel will have

precisely one point of intersection.
Book Practice – Ex2* Q9 P130

Line a:
Line a is a vertical line and hence has an
undefined gradient. Any line of the form 𝑥 = 𝑘
where 𝑘 > 0 will do.

Line b:
Line b has a positive y-intercept and a negative
gradient, so any line of the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 +
𝑐 where 𝑚 < 0 and 𝑐 > 0 will do.

Line c:
Line c has a negative y-intercept and a positive
gradient, so any line of the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 +
𝑐 where 𝑚 > 0 and 𝑐 < 0 will do.
