Summary Sheet -SUBTRACTION

Task 1: Prior Knowledge -Mentor will place a toy box or a container with toys, coins,
blocks, beads, in front of the students and pairs them up. The mentor calls each pair
and asks one of them to take their favourite toy and asks the other student to count the
remaining.

Mind map – After interacting with students, let each student come up with their
answers and draw mind map accordingly.

Activity –
● Count to figure out how many objects, such as toys or forks, there are after one is added or
taken away.
● Combine small groups of objects and count to see the total.
● Group a set of objects in different ways. For example, put eight toy cars into groups of five and
three, and then into groups of four and four.
● Read picture books with children that involve adding one or taking one away, for example,
Albert Adds Up! by Eleanor May.

Students will be given a task sheet where they will complete the subtraction problem.
Task 2: Finger Counting Technique

In this technique, you have to draw out the fingers to the extent of the
smaller number to count back from the larger number.

For example, if you want to calculate 8 – 2, draw out 2 fingers and then
count from 8 backwards using the two fingers. The number that will come
on the last finger while counting back will be your answer. So, you will
count backward from 8 on your two fingers as 7 and 6. The number 6 is
the answer

Students will craft a set of subtraction statements
using their finger counting technique and then jot down
their findings in their notebook

.
Task 3: Take away game
Facilitator will use the below game to show the concept of take away or manipulatives
such as cubes, buttons, their fingers or counters. Students can also draw and
representation or picture to model the subtraction sentence. These models help
students understand the subtraction sentence.

Take-Away Dice Game

● Materials: Dice and small objects or counters.

● How to Play: Roll two dice. Use one die to determine how many objects to start
with and the other to decide how many to take away. For example, if you roll a 6
and a 3, start with 6 objects and take away 3. Count how many are left.
Task 4 : Counting back or Counting up

Counting back will help students to

find out what’s left after taking
one number away from another.
Facilitator will give example:
Suppose that there are 13 lollipops
and you eat 5 of them; how many
lollipops will remain? Let’s count
back to subtract 5 from 13.
On counting back, we get
135=8
The image shows how we can subtract by counting back!

Students will be given a task sheet where they will apply the number line strategy to solve the provided
subtraction problems.

Task 5 : Base Ten Blocks

Base ten blocks will be used to represent
hundreds, tens , ones to show the action of
subtraction. The facilitator will encourage the
students to start with building representations of
subtraction (the number being taken away from), the value of the subtrahend (the
number being subtracted), leaving behind the difference.

Students will complete the given worksheet , where they will solve the subtraction
problem using base 10 blocks strategy

Task 6 : Open number line

Open number line -An open number line that can be used for any values along
with a number line that would be useful in solving problems. The open number line is
useful in making a representation to record steps of the mental computation.

7. Students will complete the number line task sheet where they will solve the math
problem using the number line strategy.

8.Students will watch a video to understand subtraction stories students will learn to
write equations in a proper order.

9. Students will complete the two digit subtraction task sheet where they will solve the
given subtraction problem and choose any 2 two digit numbers from the spin wheel
and frame vertical subtraction examples.

10. Students will complete the task sheet where they will solve the three digit
subtraction problems.
