Document 2 : Video : “What is machine


learning?”
The document under study is an
informative video / documentary about
machine learning and its functioning.
There is only one voice = it is a voice
over, made by a computering specialist
or someone using the machine or a
journalist. The video is subjective
because only the advantages are
mentioned / objective because there
are information given.
The voice over starts saying that
human beings learn from experience
how to do things from their birth.
Thanks to that, they become more and
more capable everyday. We
understand that now machines could
do the same by analyzing statistics
without being programmed to do so.
Machines can now improve on their
own. There is an example explained by
the voice over : imagine you want a
machine to be able to recognize dogs
and cats. By showing the machine
pictures of dogs and cats, the machine
will be able to say whether it is a dog or
a cat. From the images, the machine
will learn that cats have shorter noses
and that dogs can come with a large
variety of sizes. This technology is
already applied : personal
recommendations, spam filter, fraud
detection, text correction, facial
recognition.

Video n°3 : “The laws of robotics”


The video is an informative
animated movie / documentary with
one narrator (a voice over), who may
be either a scientist or a specialist in
computering / in science fiction. The
main topic is the importance of
Asimov’s laws of robotics in fiction. It
seems the video is subjective as the
narrator wants the viewers to read
Asimov’s books / to convince people.
The first idea is that a robot may not
injure any human being / do him any
harm. The second idea is that a robot
must obey humans’ orders, unless it is
in conflict with law n°1. The third law is
that a robot may do everything to
ensure its protection unless there is a
conflict with law n°1 or n°2. Science
fiction has had a big influence on AI.
The question that is growing nowadays
is to know how to create a machine
that could become a threat (to
threaten). The question is about ethical
programming. In the case of a self-
driving car, the question is to know
how to program a machine in an
impossible situation. If there is a car
accident, what should the machine
choose ? to kill the children in front of
the car? Or to kill other people? These
two questions have been asked by
Asimov. If a machine becomes superior
to human beings, will it continue to
obey us? Will human beings be
displaced? Why would they serve us?
Would it be even ethical to have them
do so? Asimov was the first to try to
find answers.
