Identifying &

Defining Your
Core Values

Identifying Your Values
It's time to brainstorm a list of your personal values. Building on the insights you gained from the
previous reflection exercises, create a comprehensive list of adjectives that describe qualities or
traits you believe are important for living a fulfilling life.

Aim to include at least 50 items and resist the urge to filter or judge these. You’ll have the
opportunity to prioritise and refine your list later.

If you need inspiration, you’ll find a list of values at the end of this exercise, but it's best to start
by crafting your own.

Refining Your Values
At this point, you should have a list of around 50 values. Begin to narrow down this list by
selecting 20 values that feel the most important, meaningful, and desirable to you.

If you notice you've selected values that are similar or related, consider grouping them together
under a single core value that represents those traits. This will make it easier for you to remember
and prioritise them.

For example, kindness, empathy, and caring could be grouped together as compassion, while
honesty, trustworthiness, and consistency could form integrity. Similarly, considerate,
understanding, and sensitivity could be grouped under empathy.

Affirm & Define Your Core Values
Now it's time to refine your values. Out of the 20 you selected earlier, choose the top five that
resonate with you the most. These will be your core values, the ones that are essential to your
identity, purpose, and fulfilment. They'll guide you in making better decisions, setting goals, and
living in alignment with your values.

While ranking your values is optional, it can help you prioritise them based on their importance
to you. Keep in mind that while your true core values may remain relatively stable, it's still good
practice to periodically review and reflect on them. Doing so can help you stay connected to
what matters most.
