Making a Scrappy Quilt

This quilt was designed with the goal of using up small pieces of fabric, or scraps, in a modern design. The
colored pieces, or accent fabric, can all be cut from scraps. Instructions are also included for starting from
yardage.

Notes on Yardage Requirements and Cutting Instructions

• The sashing listed below refers to all of the fabric that surrounds the individual blocks. I chose for the
sashing to be the same as the background in my block, but variation is welcome. The border goes around
the outside of the assembled rows made up of blocks with sashing in between.
• While cutting accent strips from yardage, consider how much color variation you would like. You may
want it all to be one color or you may use an abundance of color.
• The directions for starting with yardage over scraps have you begin with longer strips than the finished
5” strips to streamline the process. In some instances, you will subcut your strips before assembly into
varying sizes. Make sure you match up the correct length strips during assembly.
•You may have some leftover strips or pieced strips when using yardage.

ASSEMBLY

Sewing Your Strips figure 1

1. Choose 3 accent strips to be sewn

together with 2 background strips. Make sure your
strips are the same length. (figure 1)

2. Sew one accent color strip RST with a background

strip. Press seams open. Repeat this step with
another accent strip and background strip.
(figure 2) figure 2

3. Sew these two sets of strips together with RST

and press open. Lastly, take your third accent strip
and sew it RST with your 4 pieced together strips.
Press seams open. You now have a strip set. + = + =
(figure 3)

4. If you started with yardage: Cut your strip set into

sections that measure 5 inches in length. If you be- figure 3
gan with 20” strips, you will have 4 blocks measur-
ing 5” x 5” and if you began with WOF strips, you
will have 8 blocks measuring 5” x 5”. (figure 4)
+ + =
TIP: If you started with scraps that all measure 5” in
length, decide on combinations for your strip sets
and chain piece your strips for
efficiency. figure 4

5. Repeat this process until you have reached the

necessary number of blocks as shown below. You
5”
may have leftover strips or sections of a strip set de-
pending on the size of your quilt. = 5”

6. Refer to the previous table or following page for figure 5
block layout. Lay out all your blocks in your desired
design. Starting with your top row, sew your fin-
ished blocks together with the 3” x 5” sashing strips
in between each block. Make sure you are sewing

with RST and pressing seams open or toward the
darker fabric. (figure 5) Repeat with subsuquent
rows until all rows are assembled. figure 6

7. Using your accent strips which have been cut to

3” x WOF, sew an sashing strip onto the bottom of
your first row with RST. (figure 6) For sizes larger
than the wall hanging, you will need to first sew
your strips together with RST at the short end to
create a longer strip.Continue this process with
each row except your last row.

8. Sew all of your rows with attached sashing strips

together with RST. Press seams open or toward figure 7
darker fabric.

9. Sew the border around your assembled quilt
top. Using the 3.5” x WOF strips, sew a strip RST
onto the left and right sides of your assembled quilt
top. Sew the remaining 3.5” x WOF strips onto the
top and bottom of your quilt top. (figire 7) Again,
for sizes larger than the wall hanging, you will first
need to sew your strips together on the shorter
end to make a longer strip.
