Data Link Layer and Medium Access Control Sublayer - Summary

1. Data Link Layer

- Design issues including transmission errors, error detection, and flow control.

- Services provided to the network layer: unacknowledged connectionless service,

acknowledged connectionless service, and acknowledged connection-oriented service.

2. Error Detection and Correction

- Types of errors: single-bit, multiple-bit, and burst errors.

- Error-detecting codes: Parity, Checksums, and Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRCs).

- Error-correcting codes: Hamming codes, Binary convolutional codes, Reed-Solomon codes,

and Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes.

3. Elementary Data Link Protocols

- Simplex protocols: Utopian protocol, Stop-and-Wait protocol, and sliding window protocols

(Go-Back-N and Selective Repeat).

4. Medium Access Control Sublayer

- Channel allocation methods including static and dynamic.

- Protocols like ALOHA, Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), and Collision-Free protocols.

- Ethernet standards and switching technologies: Classic Ethernet, Switched/Fast Ethernet,

Gigabit, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
