1. (a) Calculate the Nyquist rate for the signal x(t) = cos(πt) + 5sin(2πt) + cos(4πt).

(c) Justify whether the system with output y(n) = cos[x(n)] is invertible.
(d) Determine the conditions on the sampling interval Ts so that x(t) is uniquely represented by discrete-
time sequence x(n) = x(nTs ), where x(t) = cos(2πt)sinc(t) + 3sin(6πt)sinc(2t)

2. (a) Let x(n) = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

Find and sketch the following signals derived from x(n)
(i) y1 (n) = x(n − 3) (ii) y2 (n) = x(−n) (iii) y3 (n) = x(3n − 1)
(b) Determine the sequence of operations required to generate x(n − M
N ) from x(n)
(c) Let x(n) be a real and even periodic signal with period N = 10 and Fourier series coefficients Xk .

3. (a) Determine whether the following signals are power signals, energy signals or neither.

(b) Justify whether the system with x(n) as input and y(n) as output defined by y(n) = median{x(n −
1), x(n), x(n + 1)} is
(i) time-invariant (ii) linear
(c) The impulse response of a system is h(n) = ( 21 )n u(−n). Determine whether the system is causal.

4. (a) Find the frequency response of a system with h(n) = δ(n) − δ(n − 1)
(b) Let x(n) be real sequence and let x(n) ↔ X(ejω ). Prove that the magnitude and phase spectrum
are even and odd functions of ω respectively.
(c) Find the FT of y(n) = nan u(n), |a| < 1 [2+2+1]
5. (a) Does convolution of an odd signal with an odd signal yields an odd signal? Justify.
(b) Find u(n) ∗ u(n)
(c) Find graphically the convolution sum of gate function with itself. [1+1+3]
