Problem#

A bulletin board for the main instructions for protection from COVID-19, is shown in
the figure below. The board is made of a thin flat plate 5 m (width) × 1 m (height). The
board is mounted on two cylindrical poles of the same diameter of 40 cm and height 4
m. If the wind blows normal to the board at velocity of 10 km/h, calculate:
a) The drag force on the two poles and the flat board.
b) The maximum bending moment at bottom base holding the poles.
For sea-level standard air,  = 1.2 kg/m3 and µ = 1.8×10-5 kg/ (m .s).

Given:
 = 1.2 kg/m3 and µ = 1.8×10-5 kg/ (m .s)
V = 10 km/h = 10(1000/3600) = 2.778 m/s
Solution:

a) The drag force on the two poles and the flat board.
Reynolds No. on poles:
𝜌𝑉𝐷𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑒 (1.2)(2.778)(0.4)
𝑅𝑒𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑒 = = = 74074
𝜇 1.8x10−5
From table 7.3 for short cylinder (L/D) = 10 and Re = 7.4x104
CDpole ≈ 0.82

Reynolds No. on flat board:

𝜌𝑉𝐻𝑏𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 (1.2)(2.778)(1)
𝑅𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 = = = 185185.2 = 1.852x105
𝜇 1.8x10−5

From table 7.3 for rectangular plate normal to stream at b/h = 5: CDboard ≈ 1.2

FDpoles = 2 (½ V2Apole CDpole) = 2(½)(1.2)(2.778)2(4x0.4)(0.82) = 12.15 N

FDboard = ½ V2Aboard CDboard = ½ (1.2)(2.778)2(1x5)(1.2) = 27.778 N

FDtotal = FDpoles + FDboard = 12.15 N + 27.778 N = 39.93 N

b) The maximum bending moment at bottom base holding the poles

Mbase = FDpoles (2 m) + FDboard (4.5)

Mbase = (12.15 N) (2 m) + (27.778 N) (4.5) = 149.296 N.m ≈ 149.3 N.m

Mbase = 149.3 N.m
