DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 5

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Find the area of a parallelogram in square meters and centimeters;
b. write the area of parallelogram; and
c. work cooperatively.
Topic: Area of Parallelogram
Instructional Materials: Paper tarpaulin and pictures.
Reference: BEC PELC IV.A.5
Values Integration: Cooperation

II. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

I. Preliminaries

a. Greetings
Good morning, everyone! Good morning Ma’am!

b. Prayer
May I request the prayer leader to please be (Prayer leader will lead the prayer.)
here in front to lead the prayer.

c. Checking of attendance None Ma’am

Who are absent today?
Alright! Let’s give yourselves a very good (The pupils will perform the very good
clap for having a perfect attendance. clap)

d. Checking of assignment
Class do we have an assignment? Yes Ma’am
Okay let us check. (The pupils will check and pass their
Please pass your assignment forward. assignments)
e. Motivation
Let us sing the “Mathematics Time”

Mathematics Time

It’s mathematics time (The pupils will sing the song)

It’s mathematics time
Let us all get ready now
It’s mathematics time. (3x)

f. Review
Last time, we have discussed the parts of
the circle , right? Yes Ma’am

Circe is a closed plane figure not made up

of line segments.

Circle has 4 main parts, the circumference,

center, diameter and radius.
Who can tell me what is circumference? Circumference is the enclosing
boundary or the edge of the circle.
How about the center? Center is the center point of a circle.
What is diameter? Diameter is the distance across the
circle through center.
How about the radius? Radius is half of the diameter
So if the diameter of a circle is 10, what do
you think its radius? 5 Ma’am
Great! I think you are now ready for a new
lesson.

II. LESSON PROPER

A. Activity

Before we proceed to our new lesson.

Let us have an activity first.
Let us divide the class into 5 groups.
I have here an envelope , inside the envelope there
are instructions of what are you going to do in your
activity. Is that clear? Yes Ma’am
Before I distribute the envelopes. What are the
things you need to do during group activity?
Always remember the “GROUPS” Get along
G stands for? Respect others
R for? On task
O? Use quiet voices
U? Participate
P? Stay in your group
S for?
Alright, I think you are now ready. Group leaders (Leaders will come forward)
please come forward and get your envelopes here.
Discuss it with your group and time allotted for you
to do it , is 5 mins. Your timer starts now.

ACTIVITY:
Step 1:
Cut out a rectangle that is 13 units long
and 8 units wide from a graphing paper
Step 2:
On one side of the rectangle , cut out a
triangle having a base of 8 units.
Step 3:
Attach the triangle to the other side of the
rectangle. The new shape is called
parallelogram.

All leaders should paste their work on the board.

Thank you so much everyone! Let us now proceed
to our lesson.

B. Analysis
Quadrilateral is a four sided polygon and one of
this is parallelogram.

Parallelogram is a simple quadrilateral with two

pairs of parallel sides. The opposite or facing sides
of parallelogram are of equal length and the
opposite angles of parallelogram are equal of
measures.

The width of the rectangle is the same as the base

of the parallelogram. We also note that the area of
rectangle is the same as the area of parallelogram.
We can solve the area by multiplying the measure
of the base by the measure of the height.
Example 1:
Marco’s family has a garden that is parallelogram
in shape. The height of the parallelogram is 7 feet
and its base is 14 feet. What is the area of the
garden?

Formula: A= b x h
Substitute the value to the formula:
A = 14ft. x 7 ft.
A = 98 sq. ft.
Example 2:
Find the area of the parallelogram.

12 cm

10 cm
Formula: A = b x h
A = 10 cm x 12 cm
A = 120 sq. cm.
Do you have any questions and clarifications
regarding our topic on finding the area of
parallelogram?

C. Abstraction

What is parallelogram? Parallelogram is a simple quadrilateral

The length of rectangle is the same as the base of with two pairs of parallel sides.
parallelogram and the width is the same as the
height of parallelogram.
To find the area of a rectangle is length x width
while finding the area of parallelogram it is base x
height.
Who can give me the formula in finding the area of
a parallelogram? A=bxh

D. Application

Get your mathematics notebook and solve for the

area of a parallelogram.

1.A backyard is shaped like parallelogram with a

base of 30 m and a height of 27 m. What is the area
of the backyard?
2. A playground is a parallelogram in shape. Its
base is 20m and its height is 12m .What is the area
of the playground?

IV.EVALUATION
A. Identify what is being asked.

1.

3.5 cm

7 cm
What is base (b) ? ________
What is height (h) ? _______

2. 4 dm

6 dm
What is the formula in finding the area of parallelogram? ___________________
B. Find the area of the parallelogram.

V.ASSIGNMENT
Find the area, base or height of the parallelogram.

1.b – 10 cm 2. b – 13.5 m 3. b - ______ 4. b – 11 cm

h - 6.8 cm h – 16 m h – 5m h - ______
A - _______ A - _______ A – 65 m A – 126 cm
