Was and were are the past simple form of to be.
 In affirmative, we use was for I/ she/ he/ it. We use were for we/ you/ they.
Example: I was at home last night.
They were in England last year.
 In negative, we use wasn’t for I/ she/ he/ it. We use weren’t for we/ you/
they.
Example: I wasn’t at home last night.
They weren’t in England last year.
We use was and were to:
 To talk about completed actions in the past.
Example: I was at Tina’s party.
We were in grade 4 last year.
Anna was in Ha Nam last week.
 To describe when something happened. We normally use past time
expressions like last week/ month/ year, in 2009, two days ago, this
morning, an hour ago… Example: David was at the office
yesterday.
 To talk about dates and places of birth.
Example: Susan was born in 1979.
Notes:
In the past simple, there is and there are become there was and there
were.
Example: There was a note for you on the table.
There wasn’t any milk in the bottle.
Was there a cinema in this town? Yes, there was.
There were clouds in the sky.
There weren’t any books on the table.
Were there any apples in the fridge? No, there weren’t.
In questions, the question word (Why, When, Where, Who, How much ect.) goes
before question word + was / were + subject.
Example: A: Where was Martin last weekend?
B: He was in Nha Trang.
