ABSTRACT

Organic farming, a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture, prioritizes soil health and biodiversity
conservation. By minimizing synthetic inputs like pesticides and fertilizers, it fosters resilient
ecosystems and produces nutrient-rich crops. Environmental benefits include reduced soil and water
contamination, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhanced carbon sequestration. Organic
practices such as crop rotation and composting promote soil fertility and microbial diversity.
However, challenges like limited market access and higher production costs persist, hindering
widespread adoption. Policy support is crucial to address these barriers and incentivize organic
farming. Despite challenges, organic agriculture offers numerous advantages for human health and
well-being. Organic produce tends to have higher levels of essential nutrients and antioxidants, while
also minimizing exposure to harmful pesticide residues. Moreover, organic farming contributes to
local food systems, rural livelihoods, and community resilience. Overall, organic farming represents
a promising pathway towards resilient and regenerative food systems, aligning with environmental,
social, and economic sustainability goals.

Title Of The Project:

1.) Need for the Study

Environmental Impact
 Water Quality: Organic farming practices, such as crop rotation and cover cropping
help to reduce nutrient runoff into water bodies, improving water quality.
 Carbon Sequestration:
helping to mitigate climate change.
 Biodiversity: Organic farming promotes biodiversity by creating diverse ecosystems
that support a wide range of organisms, including pollinators and beneficial insects.

Economic Impact
 Resilience: Organic farming systems are often more resilient to climate change and
economic fluctuations due to their reliance on natural processes and local resources.
 Rural Development:
and supporting local businesses.
 Fair Trade: Organic farming often aligns with fair trade principles, ensuring that
farmers receive fair prices for their products.

Health and Nutritional Benefits
 Reduced Exposure to Toxins:
pesticides and herbicides, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.
 Higher Nutrient Content:
levels of certain nutrients, such as antioxidants and vitamins.

1
 Improved Gut Health: The diverse microbial communities in organic soils
can contribute to the production of healthier foods that support gut health.
 Yield Fluctuations: Organic yields can be more variable than conventional
yields, influenced by factors like weather and pest pressure.
 Market Access: Access to markets for organic products can be challenging,
especially for small-scale farmers.

Emerging Research Areas

 Precision Organic Farming: The integration of technology and data-driven
approaches to optimize organic farming practices.
 Organic Livestock Production: Exploring sustainable and ethical methods
of raising livestock without the use of synthetic chemicals.
 Soil Health and Nutrient Management: Developing innovative strategies
for improving soil health and nutrient cycling in organic systems.
 Climate-Smart Organic Agriculture: Adapting organic farming practices
to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

2.Objective (in bullet points):

 Preserve and enhance soil fertility: Organic farming practices like crop
rotation, cover cropping, and green manuring help maintain and improve
soil health, structure, and fertility.
 Conserve water resources: By reducing soil erosion and improving water
retention, organic farming helps conserve water resources.
 Protect biodiversity: Organic farming promotes biodiversity by creating
diverse ecosystems that support a wide range of organisms, including
pollinators and beneficial insects.
 Reduce pollution: By avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers,
organic farming minimizes water and air pollution.
 Mitigate climate change: Organic farming practices can help sequester
carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating
climate change.
 Reduce input costs: Organic farmers rely on natural resources and
biological processes, reducing dependence on expensive synthetic inputs.
 Increase farmer income: Organic products often command higher prices,
leading to increased income for farmers.
 Promote rural development: Organic farming can create employment
opportunities, especially in rural areas.
 Ensure long-term sustainability: By promoting sustainable practices,
organic farming can ensure the long-term viability of agricultural systems.
 Improve human health: Organic food is often higher in essential nutrients
and antioxidants, and it is free from harmful pesticide residues.
 Promote fair trade: Organic farming often aligns with fair trade principles,
2
ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their products.
 Empower communities: Organic farming can empower farmers and
communities by promoting self-reliance and local food systems.

By focusing on these objectives, organic farming aims to create a more

sustainable, equitable, and healthy food system.

3.) Work Plan (Include Detailed Methodology with Time

Schedule):

 Location Visited: Royal County, 1st Phase, Gottigere, Kothnur,

Bengaluru-560083.
 Time Spent: 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM.
 Detailed Methodology:

2:15 to 2:45 PM: Arrival and Introduction to farming. Creating a compost from
organic waste materials like mud to enrich the soil with nutrients.

2:45 to 3PM: Practical hands on demonstration of ploughing by using

tractors(used for cultivation) and tools like hoe present in the location.

3PM to 3:30PM: Learning more about Environmental benefits, no any kind of

artificial chemicals is used like pesticides, fertilizers. Only organic matter is
required to nurture the plant. Large plots of open land are used for massive crop
cultivation.
We learnt that instead of pesticides we can use products like neem oil,
biopesticides for pest reduction.

3:30 to 4:15PM: Manually removing weeds or unwanted parts of a crop by using

hoe in the field. Learning about weather conditions like temperature, moisture,
sunlight required for cultivation.

4:15 to 4:30PM: Photoshoot Session and recap of our work and experience of
planting only by using organic matter.

4.) Outcome after completion of the activity (in bullet points):

 Improved Soil Health: Organic practices like composting enhance soil

structure, fertility, and water-holding capacity. 3
 Reduced Pollution: By avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic
farming minimizes water and air pollution.
 Biodiversity Conservation: Organic farming promotes biodiversity by
creating diverse ecosystems that support a wide range of organisms.
 Climate Change Mitigation: Organic farming practices can help sequester
carbon in the soil, contributing to climate change mitigation.
 Higher Income: Organic products often command premium prices, leading to
increased income for farmers.
 Reduced Input Costs: Organic farmers rely on natural resources and
biological processes, reducing dependence on expensive synthetic inputs.
 Market Opportunities: Growing consumer demand for organic products
creates new market opportunities for farmers.
