DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE AND HEALTH VI

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the pupils shouldbe able to;
1. Desrcibe the function of each organ of the digestive system and trace the pathway
of the food through the digestive tract.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of digestive function.
3. Expound precautionary measure to maintain and keep healthy body.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

TOPIC : Structures and Functions of the Digestive System
REFERENCE: Science 8
MATERIALS: Laptop, Chalk , Pictures and Catolina
VALUES: Giving importance of our health.

III. PROCEDURE
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPIL’S ACTIVITY
A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

Good morning , class!

Good morning, teacher Aubrey!
Is anyone absent today?
None, ma’am!
Very good! Before we start, first, go back to
your proper seats, stop eating, keep your
things inside your bags, and pay attention to
teacher.

Who can lead a prayer?

(Mariel will lead the prayer and everyone will

bow their heads.)
PRAYER
Thank you God for all the things you've made
our world to be. For every single living plant,
insect, bird and tree. Thank you God for all
the people you have placed around us. For
every single parent, friend and teacher that
we trust. Thank you Lord for all the gifts you
send to us each day. For every single meal
and snack, for cuddles, toys and play. Thank
you God for caring for us. We know you
always see our every need, our worries,
cares, our laughter, joys and tears. Thank you
Lord that you're our friend. You delight in all
we do, especially when you hear our prayers,
and we give thanks to you.
Amen.
Amen.

So, class, before we sit down, please check

the surroundings and pick up any pieces of
papers you see.

Okay, please sit down.

Thank you, ma’am.

1. REVIEW
Okay, class, before we proceed to our
new topic, let’s have a recap of what
we learned yesterday.

So, who remembers our topic

yesterday?
Student1. “Our topic yesterday was
about the rotation of the Earth.”
Very good!

2. MOTIVATION

Now, let’s have a short energizer. I am going

to show a bunch of pictures. These pictures
are actually body organs, and I would like you
to guess which one it is. You can raise your
hand if you want to answer, and if not, keep
quiet and observe.
( Pupils will participate)
First picture.

Student 1: Mouth.
What do you is this?

Student 2: Stomach.
How about this one?

Student 3: Small intestine.

Next, this one?

Student 4: Esophagus
How about the lower part? And the upper
part?

Student 5: Rectum and anus.

Lastly, what do you think is this?
Student 6: Large Intestine.

B. LESSON PROPER
1. PRESENTATION
The pictures I presented a while ago
have something to do with our lesson
for today, and it is all about Digestive
system.

2. DISCUSSION
Ok class, do you have any idea about
the Digestive System?
(Pupils will raise their hands)
Ryan: “Digestive system is the one that
responsible for the food we eat.”
Very good, that is right.

Let’s define first what is Digestive

System?

It is the system of organs responsible

for getting food into and out of the
body and for making use of food to
keep the body healthy.

Let us take a journey throughout the

human digestive system to see how it
works and how the organs coordinate
in order to carry out the process of
digestion.

The journey of the food starts from

the mouth down to the anus takes
about 18-20 hours.
(Pupils will read.)
First, can anyone volunteer to please
read the first process?
( Pupils will raise their hands)
A. Ingestion – is the first process that
happens in digestive system. It is the
journey of taking in food or any
substance into the body through the
mouth.
The next process is Digestion, anyone
who wants to read?

(Pupils will raise their hands)

B. Digestion – is the second process.
It is the process that involves
breakdown of large foo molecules
into smaller molecules for easy
absorption of the cells. 

1.Physical/Mechanical Digestion –
teeth bites, chews and grinds food
into something we can swallow.
2.Chemical Digestion - salivary glands
adds saliva to begin the digestive
process of carbohydrates and fat.
3.Then, the tongue pushes food
around as we chew and sends food
down to the esophagus.
4.The mass of chewd up food is called
Bolus.

Next, who wants to read?

(Pupils will raise their hands)
Esophagus – receives food from
mouth.
Epiglottis is a small flap that folds over
your windpipe as you swallow to
prevent you from choking.
A series of muscular contractions
within the esophagus, called
peristalsis, delivers food to your
stomach.
Who wants to read?

Stomach – it is a muscular sac that

actually chums, mashes and adds
special chemicals, or gastric juices, to
the bolus.

Lining of the stomach is protected

from the gastric juices by a mucus
covering so that the gastric juices
don’t try to digest the stomach itself.

Bolus moves in peristalsis and is

broken down some more into a thick
liquid known as chyme.

As the chyme flows through the small

intestine by peristalsis, it is further
broken down into smaller nutritional
parts.

The vitamins, minerals, proteins,

carbohydrates, fats, water, and salts
from the food pass through hair like
projections all along the interior lining
of the small intestine called villi.
There are also helpful liquids and
chemicals from the pancreas and liver
that help in the digestion and
absorption.

So, what are those helpful organs?

First, we have the liver and the gall
bladder this is the picture of the liver
together with the gall bladder.

And the next helpful organ is

pancreas, please read.

Okay, that’s the 3 helpful organs

again, (Denver will read)

Very good!

Okay, lets proceed to the third

process which is

C. Absorption – it occurs mostly in

the small intestine where several
digestive juices, pancreatic juices, and
bile aid in the chemical digestion of
food.
D. Assimilation – fourth process
occurs in the digestive system. It is
the movement of digested food
nutrients into the blood vessels of the
small intestine through diffusion and
use of nutrients into the body cells
through microvilli.

Large intestine – it connects the small

intestine to the rectum.

Stool or waste left over from the

digestive process, is passed through
the colon by means of peristalsis.

E. Egestion/Elimination – last process

occurs in the digestive system.

That’s right, again do you understand

how digestion take place and how the
different organs of the digestive
system work together to digest food
and use by the body?

Any questions or clarifications, class?

Yes ,ma’am!
Then, may I ask the class if how much
you have understood the topic.

What are the different organs of the

digestive system?
( Jordan will answer)
How these organs work in the
digestion of foods?
(Mariel will answer)
Very good, class!
3. GENERALIZATION
Digestion starts when food is taken into the
mouth.
Eric: “Ingestion”
What do you call the stage/process where in is
the taking in of the food through the mouth?
Renzyl: “Digestion”
The second stage/ process which involved in the
breaking down of the foods into nutrients?
Jonette: “Absorption”
The next stage/ process in the digestive process
which involved in the taking in nutrients by the
cell?
Rizza: “Assimilation”
And last process that is removing of any leftover
waste/materials from the body?
Ivan: “Egestion/Elimination”

4. APPLICATION
Okay, we have an activity called Wordy GUT!

Directions: Complete the crossword puzzle. Write

your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM CROSSWORDPUZZLE.

IV. EVALUATION
Direction: Read carefully and encircle the correct answer.
V. Evalutaion
Direction: Plaace the names of the organs in their correct place.
