SC613-Mathematical Foundation for Data

Science - Assignment 6

14 Aug 2023

Q1) A nationalized bank has found that the daily balance available in its
saving bank accounts follows a normal distribution with a mean of Rs. 2500
and a standard deviation of Rs. 500. The percentage of savings account
holders who maintain an average daily balance more than Rs. 3300 is ?

Q2) Bengal Regiment has 1000 soldiers (assumption). Assume the mean
height of soldiers to be 68.22 inches with a variance of 10.8 (inches). How
many soldiers in the regiment would you expect to be over 6 feet tall?
Given that the area under the standard normal curve between Z = 0 and Z
= 0.35 is 0.1368; and between Z = 0 and Z = 1.15 [1feet = 12 inches]

Q3) The results of a particular examination are given below in a summary

form: Results: Passed with distinction 15%, Passed without distinction
42%, Failed 43%, Total 100%. It is known that a candidate gets plucked if
he obtains less than 40 marks, out of 100 while he must obtain at least 75
marks in order to pass with distinction. Determine the mean and standard
deviation of the distribution of marks assuming this to be of normal type

Q4) Y ∼ U ni(0, 5). Find the probability that the roots of the equation
4x2 + 4xY + Y + 2 = 0 are both real.

Q5) Suppose a binary message (either 0 or 1) is transmitted from location

A to location B. The data sent over is subject to a channel noise N. So to
reduce the possibility of error, the value 2 is sent when the message is 1 and

1
the value -2 is sent when the message is 0. At the receiver end if the value
R (mixture of data (either 2 or -2) and noise) is received then 1 is
concluded if R ≥ 0.5 and 0 is concluded if R < 0.5. Assuming channel noise
N is normally distributed with mean 0 and variance 1, determine the error
probabilities for both the messages. R = x + N , where R is the received
value of signal, x can take values +2 or -2. N is Noise

Q6) The number of oil tankers arriving at a certain refinery each day has a
Poisson distribution with parameter λ = 2. Present port facilities can
service three tankers a day. If more than three tankers arrive in a day, the
tankers in excess of three must be sent off. a) What is the expected number
of tankers arriving daily? b) On a given day, what is the probability of
having to send tankers away

Q7) The number of days ahead travellers purchase their airline tickets can
be modelled by an exponential distribution with the average amount of
time equal to 15 days. Find the probability that a traveller will book ticket
10 days in advance.
