E09 Lightning protection
E09 Lightning protection
1. GENERAL
The lightning protection scope of work covers an active lightning protection system.
1.1. Standard
Submit layout drawings of the lightning protection system showing the following
information:
- Details of the locations and types of joints, air and earth terminations, downconductors,
materials used, and provisions for minimising galvanic action.
2. EARTH TERMINATIONS
2.1. Once the energy is conducted to ground level, a low impedance ground is essential to
dissipate the lightning energy into the earth mass as effectively as possible. The earthing
system shall consist of:
2.3. Bare Copper Cable 50mm2 for connecting copper rods together .
2.4. Exothermic Welded Cadweld for welding copper rod and bare copper cable. The
connection process shall satisfy IEEE Standard 80 - 1989 (Grounding) and IEC Standard
837 - 1989 (Connectors).
2.5. Grounding Enhancement Material shall be used as considered necessary by the supplier.
2.6. An approved earth pit shall be used to connect the down conductor to the earthing system.
The resistance value of the earth termination system shall be 10 ohms or less..
3. AIR TERMINAL
3.1. Install a new lightning system for the non-protection area using active air terminals equal
to Dynasphere or approved equivalent. The air terminal should have an area of coverage
of 90-120m protection radius.
3.2. The active air terminal is to intercept lightning discharges at a preferred point earlier than
conventional lightning protection techniques. The air terminal is to be passive on approach
of a storm, and produce minimal corona. In the milliseconds prior to the approach of a
lightning down leader it shall become active through capacitive coupling, absorb energy
and assist in triggering an upward intercepting discharge to capture and control the main
downleader. Lightning should then be drawn to the downconductor system to enable the
safe transfer of energy to ground.
3.4.2. The main copper conductor shall be made of electrical grade copper of minimum cross-
sectional area of 75mm2.
3.4.3. In the final run to the earth pits and where it shall be exposed to unauthorised
interference the downconductor shall be placed in a protective PVC pipe of 3mm
minimum wall thickness so as to avoid mechanical damage and increase safety.
3.4.4. The downconductor shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
and shall not be subject to bends of less than 0.5 metres radius.
3.4.5. The downconductor shall be secured to the structure by metallic fastenings as approved
by the Project Director at least every 2 metres.
3.5.2. The insulated masts for installation of air terminations shall be made of fibreglass. The
terminations shall be similar to ESE or equivalent as approved by the Project Director
with adequate protection radius to cover the entire building. The locations of the masts
and terminations shown on the Drawings are approximate only. The Sub-Contractor
shall verify on site the best location to protect the site area from a lightning strike and
submit proposal to the Project Director for approval.
3.5.3. The supporting masts shall be readily replaceable by a longer one (without additional
builder's work being required) whilst the insulated masts shall be re-usable when
extending the air termination in future.
