2. Final Answer MUST have correct units in all calculations in Part B and C.
3. Answers to multiple choice questions MUST be written in the boxes below
4. Relax! Good luck.

Answers to PART C must be filled here:

MC. 1 MC. 5

MC. 2 MC. 6

MC. 3 MC. 7

MC. 4 MC. 8

1
PART A: Problems
P1. Two masses hang by a rope from a massless pulley as shown in the
figure. Mass m1 is 2.0 kg and m2 is 4.0 kg. The pulley is frictionless.
The masses are released from rest.
a) Determine the acceleration of m2
b) What is the tension of the rope?
[10 points]

P2. A stone is tied to a 3 meter long rope and rotated in a vertical circle.
What is the minimum speed, v that the stone could have at the top of the
circle so that the rope just remains straight tight there?
[6 points]

2
P3. A wooden sphere of mass 6.0 kg and radius 3.0 cm is hanging
at rest at one end of a massless string of length 40.0 cm. A bullet
of mass 9.5 g is fired with a velocity of 630 m/s into the sphere.
The bullet hits the sphere and sticks at the middle of the sphere.
The sphere and bullet together then swing upward along the arc
of a circle. Their centre of mass goes up a vertical distance h
before it comes momentarily to rest, see figure.

a) What is the speed of sphere and bullet combination after the bullet hits the sphere?
b) Using conservation of mechanical energy, find the value of h
c) Using parallel axis theorem, find the moment of inertia of sphere and bullet
combination about the point o?
d) If the angular velocity of the centre of mass about o at point p is 1.16 rad/s, what is
the rotational kinetic energy at point p?
[12 points]

3
P4: A beam of mass m=100 kg is hinged to a wall and is
connected with a massless cable as shown in the figure. A steel
ball (mass M=500 kg) is hanging by a massless rope from the
other end of the beam (a=2.0 m and b= 3.0 m).

a) Draw a free body diagram showing all forces acting on

the beam.
b) What is the tension in the cable?
c) Find the horizontal and the vertical forces at the hinge.
d) Find the direction and the magnitude of the total force on
the beam from the hinge.
[12 points]

4
P5. A block of mass 2.8x105 kg is attached to a horizontal spring and the system oscillates
with a period of 0.1 seconds and amplitude of 0.2 meters.
a) Find the total mechanical energy of the mass-spring system in this device
b) How fast is the mass moving when it passes through the spring equilibrium point?
[8 points]

5
PART C: Multiple Choice Questions (1.5 points Each)

(MC. 1) A rocket accelerates up at a rate of 12 m/s every second. When the rocket is at height
500 m, its engines are turned off. Which of the following statement is correct AFTER the
engines are turned off?

a) The rocket stops at 500 m

b) The rocket is in free fall and falls down immediately
c) The rocket is in free fall and continues going up
d) The rocket continues going up with a constant velocity of 12 m/s

(MC. 2) You walk at 2.0 m/s east for 2.0 sec. You then walk at 2.0 m/s south for 2.0 sec.
Which figure gives the direction for the CHANGE in your velocity for the total 4 sec?

(MC. 3) Two boys throw balls A and B at the same
time with the same speed. The balls follow the paths
shown. Which ball hits the ground first?

a) ball A
b) ball B
c) both hit at the same time
d) need more information

child slowly walks towards the center of the merry-go-round. As the child moves toward the
center, the rotational speed

b) Decreases
c) Remains the same
d) need more information
