2. a) At room temperature, the gap between bar A and B is 0.25 mm. What are the stresses
induced in the bars if the temperature rise is 35oC. Areas of cross section of bar A and B are
1000 mm2 and 800 mm2 respectively. Their Youngs modulii are EA=200 GPa and EB = 100GPa.
Their coefficients of linear expansion are αA = 12x10-6 /oC and αB = 23x10-6 /oC.
b) Determine values of major and minor principal stresses and maximum shear stress (in-
plane) for the given state of stress. Also determine values of principal plane angles and
maximum shear stress (in-plane) angle. σx=+50MPa; σy=+25MPa and Ԏxy=+40MPa.
b) An air vessel of torpedo is 50 mm in diameter and 10 mm thick, the length being 2m.
Find the change in diameter and length, when charged to 12MPa internal pressure. Take
E=200 GPa and μ=0.3.

4. a) A rectangular beam of span 4 m, width 100 mm and depth 200 mm is simply supported at its
ends. The beam is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 5kN/m over the entire span. Find
the maximum bending stress in the beam.
b) Calculate the maximum shear stress induced in the beam of width 40 mm and depth 80 mm
subjected to shear force of 60kN.Draw the shear stress distribution across its section.
5. a) The shaft of diameter ratio 3/5 transmits a power of 2MW at 50 rpm. The maximum torque
is 30% more than the mean torque. Calculate the inner and outer diameters of the shaft if
the allowable shear stress is 60MPa.
b) A 1.5 m long cast iron column has a circular cross section of 50 mm diameter. One end of
the column is fixed and the other end is free. Taking factor of safety as 3, Calculate the
safe load using Rankine’s formula. Take allowable stress as 560MPa and a=1/1600.
6. a) From fundamentals, determine the deflection at a distance of 3m from left end of the simply
supported beam subjected to UDL throughout the span of intensity 20 kN/m. Take L=10 m,
EI=2600 kN-m2.
b) A cantilever beam projection 2.5 m from a wall is loaded with a UDL of 80 KN. Determine the
area moment of inertia of the beam section, if the deflection of beam at the free end be 8 mm.
Take E = 200 GPa. Also determine the slope at the free end.
7. a) Determine the stress induced in each bar and compression in each bar.
