ax+by=(a+b)/2 ----- ( 1 )
⇒ 3x+5y=4 ----- ( 2 )
Multiplying equation ( 1 ) by 5, we get
⇒ 5ax+5by=5(a+b)/2 ------ ( 3 )
Multiplying equation ( 2 ) by b, we get
⇒ 3bx+5by=4b ----- ( 4 )
Subtracting equation ( 4 ) from ( 3 ), we get
⇒ (5a−3b)x=(5a+5b−8b)/2

⇒ (5a−3b)x=(5a−3b)/2
⇒ x=(5a−3b)/(5a−3b)2
∴ x=1/2
Substituting value of x in equation ( 2 ) we get,
⇒ 3(1/2)+5y=4; ⇒ 3/2+5y=4 ; ⇒ 5y=4−3/2 = 5/2
⇒ y=1/2
∴ Values of (x,y) are (1/2, 1/2 )

2. Let x denotes the cost of a chair and y denotes the cost of a table. 3
⇒4x+3y=2100...(1) ;
and 5x+2y=1750...(2)

coefficients of y equal, we get
⇒8x+6y=4200....(3) ; 15x+6y=5250...(4)
On subtracting equation (3) from (4), we get
7x=1050; ⇒x=150
On substituting this value of x in equation (1), we get
4(150)+3y=2100 ; ⇒3y=1500
⇒y=500
Thus, x=150 and y=500
∴The cost of a chair is ₹150 and table is ₹500 .

now put 1/x=u and 1/y=v
60u+240v=4
15u+60v=1......(3)
100u+200v=25/6
u+2v=1/24......(4)
multiplying (4) by 15
15u+30v=5/8......(5)
subtracting (5) from (3)
30v=3/8
v=1/80 this implies y=1/v=80km/hr
put v=1/80 in (4)
u+2*1/80=1/24
u+1/40=1/24
u=1/24-1/40
u=2/120
u=1/60 this implies x=1/u=60 km/hr
hence speed of train=60km/hr and that of bus =80km/hr

28. When cars go in same direction :- 3

Suppose two cars meet at point Q. Then,
Distance travelled by car X = AQ
Distance travelled by car Y = BQ
It is given that two cars meet in 12 hours.
∴∴ Distance travelled by car X in 12 hours = 12x km
⇒⇒ AQ=12x
Distance travelled by car Y in 12hours = 12y km
⇒⇒ BQ=9y
Clearly, AQ - BQ = AB
⇒⇒12x - 12y = 72
⇒⇒ x-y = 6 -------------------------------------------------(1)
When cars go in opposite direction :-
Suppose two cars meet at point P. Then
Distance travelled by car X = AP and
Distance travelled by car Y = BP
In this case, two cars meet in 2 hours.
∴∴ Distance travelled by car X in 2 hours = 2 x km
⇒AP=2x km
Distance travelled by car Y in 2 hours 2y km
⇒BP=2y km
Clearly, AP + BP = AB
⇒ 2x + 2y = 72 ⇒ 2(x + y) = 72 ⇒ x + y = 36 -----------------------------------------------
(2)
On solving , We get,
x = 21 and y = 15.Therefore , Required speed of car X = 21 km/hr.

If speed of car and Y , each is increased by 2 km/hr and cars are moving in same
direction , then we have , x = 23 km/hr and y = 17 km/hr.
Let the time after they will meet is t.
So, tx - ty = 72
But , Here x = 23 and y = 17
Hence , 23t - 17t = 72 ⇒ 6t = 72 ⇒ t = 12
Therefore , required time after they will meet = 12 Hrs.
29. Let the number of boys and girls be x and y respectively.
As per given question ,
x/(x + y) = 75/100 ---------------------------------------(1)
(x – 15)/(( x – 15) + (y + 10)) = 60/100 -------------------------(2)
On solving above equations , We get x = 60 , y = 20
Therefore, original number of boys and girls are 60 and 20 respectively.
30. As per given question , we have ,
4/x + 6/y = 1/5 -------------------------------------------------------(1)
3/x + 4/y = 1/7---------------------------------------------------------(2)
On solving, We get x = 35, y = 70
One day’s work of a man is 1/35 part of whole work and
One day’s work of a woman is 1/70 part of whole work.
Therefore, one woman alone finishes the whole work in 70 days.
Now , one day work of 7 men and 14 women = (7/35) + (14/70) = 2/5 part of
whole work
Therefore , 7 men and 14 women will complete the whole work in 5/2 = 2.5 days.
31. Solution: 3
Let the unit digit and tens digit of a number be x and y respectively.
Then, Number (n) = 10B + A
N after reversing order of the digits = 10A + B
According to the given information, A + B = 9…………………….(i)
9(10B + A) = 2(10A + B)
88 B – 11 A = 0
-A + 8B = 0 ………………………………………………………….. (ii)
Adding the equations (i) and (ii) we get,
9B = 9
B = 1……………………………………………………………………….(3)
Substituting this value of B, in the equation (i) we get A= 8
Hence the number (N) is 10B + A = 10 x 1 +8 = 18

32. Solution: 3
Let the two numbers be x and y respectively, such that y > x.
According to the question,
y = 3x ……………… (1)
y – x = 26 …………..(2)
Substituting the value of (1) into (2), we get
3x – x = 26
x = 13 ……………. (3)
Substituting (3) in (1), we get y = 39
Hence, the numbers are 13 and 39.
33. (i) x + y = 5 and 2x – 3y = 4 3
By the method of elimination.
x + y = 5 ……………………………….. (i)
2x – 3y = 4 ……………………………..(ii)
When the equation (i) is multiplied by 2, we get
2x + 2y = 10 ……………………………(iii)
When the equation (ii) is subtracted from (iii) we get,
5y = 6
y = 6/5 ………………………………………(iv)
Substituting the value of y in eq. (i) we get,
x=5−6/5 = 19/5
∴x = 19/5 , y = 6/5
By the method of substitution.
From the equation (i), we get:
x = 5 – y………………………………….. (v)
When the value is put in equation (ii) we get,
2(5 – y) – 3y = 4
-5y = -6
y = 6/5
When the values are substituted in equation (v), we get:
x =5− 6/5 = 19/5
∴x = 19/5 ,y = 6/5
34. Given, 3

x + 2y = 5

3x + ky + 15 = 0

Also, given that the pair of equations has a unique solution.

Comparing the given equations with standard form,

a1 = 1, b1 = 2, c1 = -5
a2 = 3, b2 = k, c2 = 15

Condition for unique solution is:

a1/a2 ≠ b1/b2

1/3 ≠ 2/k

k ≠ (2)(3)

k≠6

Thus, for all real values of k except 6, the given pair of equations has a unique
solution.

35. Let the incomes of two persons be 11x and 7x . 3

Also the expenditures of two persons be 9y and 5y .
11x - 9y = 400 ...(1)
and 7x - 5 y= 400 ...(2)
Multiplying equation (1) by 5 and equation (2) by 9
we have
55x - 45 y = 2000 ...(3)
and 63x - 45 y= 3600 ...(4)
Subtracting, above equation we have
-8x =− 1600
or, x = -1600/-8
x = 200
Hence ,Their monthly incomes are 11 x 200= Rs 2200
and 7 x 200 = Rs 1400.

36. Let x be the length of the cloth and y be the cost of 3

cloth per meter.
Now X x Y = 200
Y = 200/X ….....(1)
According to given conditions,
1. If the piece were 5 m longer
2. Each meter of cloth costed Rs 2 less
i.e., (x+5) )(y-2) =200
xy - 2x+5y =210
xy-2x+5y = 210
x(200/x) - 2x +5(200/x) = 210
200 - 2x + 1000/x = 210
1000/x - 2x = 10
1000 - 2x2= 10x
X2+25 x -20x-500 = 0
X(x+25) – 20 (x+25) = 0
(x+25) (x-20) = 0
X = -25 ,20
Neglecting x =− 25 we get x = 20.
Now from equation (1), we have
y = 200/x
= 200/20
= 10
Hence ,length of the piece of cloths is 20m and rate per metre is Rs 10.
