Service Manual Thrombotimer TRT 1/2/4
Edition: Januar 2011 Version: 1.3

General / mains connection:

The Thrombotimer receives its power through an external AC mains adapter. It is possible, however, to
connect the instrument to a car’s cigarette lighter. This is enabled due to the fact that the instrument functions
with voltages in the range between 10 - 24 V DC.

General description of the functions:

Measuring block design:
Each measuring channel consists of a red LED (down*) which is supplied with pulsed light and a photo-
transistor on the opposite side. This photo-transistor is in the form of an optical measuring bridge. (* position
in the measuring block)
Pre-mounted fibre-optic light guides protect the components from contact with liquids - as may result from an
error in pipetting.
Each channel contains its own mixing motor.
There are two incubation positions, each with a timer.
The timer is activated by pushing the cuvette into the one of the incubation positions to the right. A pressure
switch is located under each of the incubation positions.
A LED serves as status display for the timer.
The active parts of the heater consist of the NTC sensor as well as the heating element (glued to the
underside).

Measuring process Brief description:

Changes in the light path, for example, through the insertion of a cuvette in the measuring channel, are
compensated for by the controllers after RESET is pressed. This means that a balanced optical measuring
bridge is present after RESET is pressed.
This procedure requires a few seconds. The instrument displays „ADJUST“ during this time.
The start of the measurement is activated by the optical bridge.
The Auto-Start-System is utilised by the optical change when a start reagent is added.
At this time, the mixing motor, which is located under each measuring channel, starts to rotate!
The measuring time at the moment clotting is detected is also registered by the optical change (Measurement
threshold). The corresponding mixing motors are then switched off.

Warning: The procedural error most often made when using the instrument is not completely inserting the
cuvette into the measuring channel (insert over the pressure point!).
This error causes the status „unstable“ to appear in the display. This is due to the fact that the ball does not
rotate in a stable manner due to the cuvette which is wrongly positioned.

The main SERVICE menu:

The Thrombotimer series features a measuring system which is completely controlled by a micro-computer.
In addition to user-friendly controls, an extensive test and pre-set program is available in the SERVICE menu.
Access to the SERVICE menu is gained by pressing the RESET key while turning the instrument on.
After the running text, the display remains dark for approx. four seconds and then displays SERVICE.
The display changes to CHECK after releasing the RESET key.
Use the TEST key to scroll through the menu.
The RESET key is then used to gain access to the individual menu items.

intensity. Use an object to insert into the measuring block. The object should
be something that will either partly block or completely block the light path.
Position --OFF-- The procedure is the same as by „ON,“ but there should be no visual reaction
to disturbances.

AC TEST Alternating current - Filter test of the opto-amplifier:

This test runs automatically. This test checks the filter’s timing.
At the end of this test, the channels display their values based on a unit measuring 12.5 ms.

DC TESTS Explanation:
DC 4, 6, 8, A are tests for controlling the stability and the offset of the AC amplifier: they are checked at CHM
1 to CHM 4 (refer to the TMS wiring diagram).

DC 5, 7, 9, B are all tests for controlling the optical light controller: they are checked at CHC 1 to CHC 4. The
value 127 must always be displayed here (cuvette with water). If this value is not reached, refer to „Adjusting.“

HEATTEST Testing the heating unit:

The deviation from the proper temperature and the heater’s energy consumption is displayed.
The consumption is displayed in digits ranging between 0 ... 255.
255 is the maximum energy consumption; the other values are correspondingly proportional.
The maximum energy consumption for TRT 1 and 2 = 15 W and for TRT 4 = 20 W.

Example: Evaluation of the display:

- 3 64
- 3 = set point deviation 1 digit = 0.026°C
64 = performance part

The display shows a deviation in the measuring block of -0.078°C and a heating performance of 3.8 W for the
TRT2.

64
255 * 15W = 3.8W

STATUS and ERROR MESSAGES:

The following messages can appear:

Here are the messages which appear upon switching the instrument on:

LOAD ROM The system displays that the program version is being load from the
program memory’s ROM.

MEMCLEAR This message only appears when the system has been turned on
for the first time, or the RAM has been temporarily removed from
its socket. In this case, the system automatically saves the factory
settings in memory. In addition, the running time, number of
measurements, number of fail measurements and number of times
the instrument has been turned on are reset to zero.

PRG-CHK The program is checked to assure that it is complete. A check-sum is

calculated and compared to a reference. If the check-sum and reference
match, then the TRT program starts and the running text is displayed.
If an error in the check-sum is found, then the boot program loads the
program version stored in ROM into the program memory. The instrument
then displays PRG FAIL. The system must be switched off and then on again.

PRG FAIL A check-sum error has appeared in the program version located in
the program memory. The boot program then loads the program
version from ROM into the program memory. The system stops
and can only be reactivated by switching the instrument off and
then on again.

PWR FAIL This message displays that the supply voltage is either too low or
has collapsed (U<8V am Siebelko). In this case, the system ceases
all activity. The system does a total restart after about one second.

ERROR 21 Check-sum error in the test parameter’s memory (calibration curves) or

in the set-up’s system settings.
This error can appear if the supply voltage is switched off during the
time when changes to the test parameters or system settings are being
made. The calibration curves or the settings should be checked if this
error appears.

measure the temperature with a digital fever thermometer.
The temperature can be adjusted with P5, located on the TMS PCB. The temperature can be made warmer
by turning P5 clockwise. Each 1 ½ revolution correlates to approx. 0.1° C.

Tip: The adjusted temperature almost never deviates from its adjusted setting. The reason for the change in
temperature should, therefore, be carefully examined.

Changing the EPROM:

The test parameters should be printed out or written down before the EPROM is changed.
After this is done, proceed as follows:

1) Remove the EPROM:

2) Activate LOAD ROM:

LOAD ROM Menu Load program from ROM

A program, which is located in memory, has been written over. It is, therefore, no longer available.

Procedure: Press RESET -> Instrument displays ? sure ?

Press RESET for 1 second -> TRT displays -ACTIVE- and loads the program
from ROM into memory.
The instrument resets itself and
displays the version number in running text.

If the key is pressed for less than one second or another key is pressed,
then this function is aborted and the instrument returns to the main menu.

3) Run CLR DATA:

CLR DATA menu Reset to factory settings:

This menu item resets all system parameters to the factory setting (as noted in the operator’s manual).

Procedure: Press RESET -> instrument displays ? sure ?

Press RESET for one second -> everything is erased. Instrument displays *DONE*
The menu returns to the main menu upon releasing the RESET key.

If the key is pressed for less than one second or another key is pressed,
then the deletion process is aborted and the instrument returns to the main menu.

Input all printed or written test parameters again.

INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE
Regular instrument maintenance is not necessary. This is due to the fact that there are probably no parts that
have a wear and tear time of between two and five years. Dusting the instrument off or cleaning the surface of
the instrument is acceptable.
