Work Methodology - Brief Description

METHODOLOGY

Introduction

The following are the basic steps we intend to follow in the execution of works in the said
project:

❑ Mobilization.
❑ Setting Out.
❑ Site clearance and top soil removal.
❑ Earth works.
❑ Excavation and Filling for structures.
❑ Concrete works.
❑ Culverts and Drainage Works.
❑ Natural material for sub base and base – Grading and Gravelling works
❑ HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
❑ Traffic Management.
❑ Quality Control.
❑ Demobilization.

1) Mobilization.

The Contractor shall, upon being notified of the award and consequent order to commence the
works, make necessary arrangements to provide the Performance Security and Third Party
Insurance for works, plant/machinery and persons connected with the project.

The Contractor shall ensure the following:


• Plant and Personnel mobilization.
• Construction of Contractor’s Camps.
• Construction of Engineer’s Laboratory, Offices and houses.
• Procurement of Engineer’s Facilities.
The Contractor shall identify suitable sites to set up a quarry, material sites and camp site for the
Site Agent and his site staff. The Contractor’s camp will accommodate the Site Agent’s offices,
stores, workshop, laboratory and plant/machinery. The Engineer’s representative will be
facilitated by provision of offices, accommodation, vehicles, survey equipment, miscellaneous
items and support staff.
2) Setting Out.
The first thing to be done will be to locate and check the control points both for alignment and
heightening. The Contractor will then set out the road alignment.
The Contractor will locate all the traverse points, note their co-ordinates & heights and submit
the survey data of such points for checking and approval by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall set out and monument the centre line of the road at Engineer’s
recommended intervals before establishing the Original Ground Levels (OGLs).
Road cross-sections will also be taken and copies given to the Engineer.
The Contractor shall also use this time to acquaint himself with the existing service lines as well
as structures.
The Contractor intends to use the available space (road reserve) and alignment with minimum
disturbance to the existing buildings to establish chainages.
3) Heavy Bush Clearance and Encroachment removal.
The Contractor shall start clearing the site, remove trees, hedges along the road reserve so as to
achieve the service level (less 200mm).This activity shall be succeeded closely with logs
removal to an instructed depth by the Engineer.
This activity shall also involve removal and reinstatement of hedges, structures and any other
obstruction or encroachment on the road reserve.

The Contractor shall control dust pollution by watering the working area.
The contractor intends to deploy adequate number of the following equipment for each of the
earthworks team:
(i) Heavy Bush Clearing: -Pangas, slashers, jembes and muttocks.
4) Excavation and filling for structures.
The Contractor shall excavate in any material for gabion works, filling works and structures.
Whenever instructed by the Engineer, the Contractor shall provide, place and compact selected
backfill material as instructed by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall provide and place gabion boxes and/or mattresses as scour protection to
river bank and bed, river training works, protection to high cuts/embankment and bridge
protection works as specified.
The gabion boxes and mattresses shall be filled with rock and grouted as instructed by the
Engineer..
5) Culvert & Drainage Works.
The Contractor shall ensure free flow conditions by excavating in any material for culverts, sub
soil drains, inlet, side drains, mitre drains, catch-water drains and outfalls.
The Contractor shall excavate, remove and dispose existing pipe culverts of up to 1200mm
diameter including demolition of inlet/outlet.
The contractor intends to deploy adequate number of the following equipment for drainage
work:
(i) Culverts works:

- 15T Dump Truck


- Wheel loader
- Poker vibrators
- Concrete Mixer
6) Natural Material - Gravel.
For Pothole-Patching; excavate, trim and cart to spoil, compact in repair to potholes and failed
pavement areas on the carriage-way and its edges.
The contractor shall perform heavy grading with watering and compaction, Provide gravel
wearing course- excavation, free haul, spread, water and compact gravel to contract
specification.
The contractor intends to deploy adequate numbers of the following equipment for each of the
pavement layer:
(i) Heavy Grading/Gravelling works - 10m3 Tippers.

- Vibrating Drum Roller
- Grader
- Water bowser
7) Concrete Works.

The Contractor shall upon receiving instructions, provide and place concrete as specified to Box
culverts and bridges.
Concrete works shall include placement of formwork, reinforcement, concreting and fixing of
heavy duty PVC pipes as specified.
All formwork, steel for reinforcement and concrete shall be as specified.
Construction of such structures shall be carried out in a sequence approved by the Engineer.
Involved works shall include but not limited to excavation, blinding, fixing of reinforcement
steel, casting of concrete and curing of concrete surfaces.
All concrete surfaces shall be cured to Engineer’s satisfaction.
Form work and props shall be striken off concrete surface after specified period has elapsed.
The contractor intends to deploy the sufficient tools and equipment for the construction of the
said works.
8) HIV/AIDS awareness Campaign.
The Contractor will conduct awareness workshops to all of the workers that will be on site for
the Contract period.
Workers shall be exposed to workshops for a minimum of two hours per session every month.
Sessions shall be interactive
Awareness posters containing key HIV/AIDS messages would be procured from relevant
authorities for the program.
The information on the closest VCT facility and the closest clinic should be displayed on notice
boards on site.
Posters should be displayed in highly trafficked areas on site.
Both male and female condoms would be readily available on site and distributed by a friendly
HIV/AIDS Champion worker.
(c) Health: First Aid
The contractor would provide, equip and maintain adequate First-Aid stations throughout the
works and notify the availability of the same to all workers.
9) Traffic Management.
When the construction activity is going on, alternate routes shall be provided for the road users.

The Contractor shall maintain the existing road by grading, shaping, watering and compaction
of existing road ahead of works. Where instructed, the Contractor shall provide gravel material,
spread, water and compact as maintenance of existing road ahead of works.
The Contractor shall construct deviations including provision of gravel material, spreading,
watering and compaction.
i. Warning signs,barriers,light lamps and Notices
We shall put up public notifications and personal safety measures to guard the public and our
own staff against any injuries. Publicity signs will be erected at the start and the end of project
to alert the public about construction works along the project road.
Besides, temporary warning signs and barriers shall at all times be erected at points where work
is in progress. The barriers shall be well illuminated at night as instructed by the Engineer.
The aforementioned signs will:-
• Give the maximum driving speeds at sections where work is in progress.
• Give the location and the extent of deviations/single lanes used as deviations.
• Location of open trenches.
• Restricted sections, or lanes of the road
ii. Speed Restriction.
The Contractor will try as much possible to limit the speed of the vehicles where it is necessary.
To achieve this, the Contactor plans to install temporary speed bumps and rumble strips at
strategic points. The Contractor will also erect barricades with reflectors to guide motorists
through the works at night.
Open trenches will be completely barricaded with reflective barriers.
10) Quality Control.
The Contractor considers Quality Control as a top priority in the execution of works. The
following aspects will be ensured as part of our Quality Control program:-
◆ Superintendence Staff: - The contractor will ensure adequate qualified and experienced
Engineers are engaged in the Project from the onset. Such Engineers are readily
available from our pool of staff. The Engineers will fully be supported by an equally
qualified technical team [Surveyors, Foremen, Headmen, Technicians and Draughtsmen
etc.] from our pool of staff.
◆ Materials: - All materials shall be of their respective kinds as described in the contract or
equally approved alternatives.
11) Demobilization.
Once the road is substantially complete, the contractor will clear the camp and leave the
campsite in a good state.

All Material sites will be restored to standards acceptable to NEMA.
The Contractor shall retain skeleton staff to carry out routine maintenance and remedy any
defects on the road during the Defects Liability Period.
