DIRECT CURRENT CIRCUIT

1. Define the following electrical quantities. Write the SI units of each quantities. [9 marks]

2. (a) How much energy in joules would be required to operates a 60 W lamp for 30 minutes?
[3 marks]

(b) How much time is required for 12.5 x 1018 electrons to leave the negative terminal of battery
if the current provided by the battery is 0.5 A? [3 marks]

(c) A 0.4 mm diameter conductor has a resistance of 250 Ω. Determine the resistance of the
same conductor if the diameter is doubled.

3. (a) A power supply generates a constant current of 2A for 10 seconds to flow through a bulb. If
4 kJ is given in a form of light and heat energy, calculate the voltage drop across the bulb.
[4 marks]

(b) If a charge of 25 C flows through a circuit within 125 ms, determine the circuit current.
[2 marks]

(c) A circuit delivers energy at the rate of 20 W and the current is 10 A. Determine the energy
of each coulomb of charge in the circuit. [2 marks]

4. (a) Refer to FIGURE 1, state the difference between circuit (a) and circuit (b). State the
equation to calculate the total resistance for each circuit.

(b) Two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in parallel. If R1 = 50 Ω and the current through R2 is
three times the value of the current through R1, determine the value of R2. [4 marks]

5. (a) A circuit consists of three resistors (R1, R2 and R3) and a DC voltage source, Vs.
(i) Draw a circuit fulfilling all the following requirements:
- R2 and R3 are connected in parallel.
- R1 is connected in series with Vs and the combination of R2 and R3.
Note : Please label all the resistors and the voltage source clearly. [5 marks]

(ii) How many branches does the circuit have ? [1 mark]


(iii) How many loops does the circuit have ? [1 mark]
