PRESENT TENSES

SIMPLE PRESENT (regular actions, routine, habits, permanent situations) In present

• Verb TO BE → [subject + to be + compl.] → expresses description, state, not actions

I am (I’m) We are (We’re) Ex.: I am from Campos.


You are (You’re) You are (You’re) He is a student.
He is (He’s) They are (They’re) We are Brazilian.
She is (She’s)
It is (It’s)

Negative form → [subj + to be + not + …]

+ He is fine. → - He is not fine. (is not = isn’t)


+ We are Brazilian → - We are not Brazilian. (are not = aren’t)

Interrogative form → [to be + subj + …?]

? Is he fine?
? Are we Brazilian?

• Main verbs → [subj + verb / verb(+s) + complement] → regular actions, routine, habits

I / you / we / they work. → verb


He/ she/ it works. → verb+s (3rd person singular)

I play soccer. / Neymar plays soccer.


You like coffee. / Joe likes coffee. / Joe and Ana like coffee.

Verbs ending in O / SH / CH / X / S / Z → +es


Go – goes wash – washes watch – watches express – expresses fix - fixes

Verbs ending in Y preceeded by consonants → -y +ies


Study – studies try – tries fly - flies

They go to school every day. / She goes to school every day.


We watch TV in the morning. / My mother watches TV in the morning.
You study English. / He studies English.

Negative form → [subj + do not / does not + verb + …] (do not = don’t / does not = doesn’t)

Interrogative form → [Do/ Does + subj + verb + …?] Do → I / you / we / they


Does → he / she / it
Ex.: + You live in Campos.
- You don’t live in São Paulo.
? Do you live in Macaé?

+ He studies English. Obs: I like to dance.


- He doesn’t study Japanese. I like dancing.
? Does he study Spanish?

PRESENT CONTINUOUS (actions in progress at the moment/ future actions)

[ subj + to be + verb(ING) ]

I am We are
You are You are working now.
He/ She/ It is They are

Negative form → Bob is not studying now. (is not = isn’t)

Interrogative form → Is Bob surfing now?

➔ Future idea: Bob is going to the beach tomorrow.

THERE BE (existence)

There is → singular
There are → plural

There is a car in the garage.


There are two books on the table.

Negative form → There is not / There are not

There is not a cup on the table.


There aren’t three cats in the house.

Interrogative form → Is there…?/ Are there…?

Is there a dog in the house?


Are there kids here?

Practice:
1. Are there pets in your house? / What are they?
2. Is there a TV set in your bedroom?
