Lesson Plan - Halves and quarters

Grade 4
I. Learning outcome:
 Discuss different numbers such as half, one quarter, three quarters. Understand this by
relating it to daily life.
 Identify half, one quarter, three quarters of a given picture or group of objects.
 Display half, one quarter and three quarters with the help of numbers/digits.
 Telling the equivalence of a fraction with another fraction.
II. Pre requisite:
 Child has a prior knowledge about sharing and grouping.
III. Resources:
 Graph sheet, Papers, Balance, Worksheets
IV. Teaching plan
a. Classroom Discussion: To understand the meaning and importance of fraction in day to
day life
Your father had bought a milk peda from the shop. Apparently the shop had only one and
hence he bought one. Now you have to share it with your brother/sister.
1. How will you share it equally?
2. Do you agree, if you get small piece?
3. How do you know that it is equally divided?
4. How will you represent your share?

Make children realize the importance of ‘equal division’ by discussing more such scenario.

b. Activities to experience ‘HALF’

Activity 1: Paper tearing & folding
1. Ask the students to take sheets of various size and ask them to
tear it randomly. Ask them to compare the pieces and ask them to
if all are same and also if the pieces from the sheet are same or
not.
2. Ask the students to fold the paper to get 2 equal parts. The students can fold it according
to his/her wish.
3. Ask them to tear and compare both the pieces.
4. Ask them to repeat the same with sheets of
different sizes.
The word ‘HALF’ will be introduced here, by saying and writing on the black board.

1
Activity 2: Using Graph sheet
In a graph sheet draw the following shapes and divide the
shapes into 2. Count the number of squares on each side
of the line. Are they equal?
Discussion:
1. Are number of squares equal?
2. How can you represent each part of the shape?
3. What is each part called?
This activity will help us introduce the children to the word half and the numerical
representation 1/2.
Worksheet 1: Colour one half of each shape
Worksheet 2: Find the fraction of the numbers

c. Activities to experience ‘QUARTER’

Activity 3: Paper folding
A craft paper or sheet of paper is given to the student. The
students are asked to fold them into half and again into half.
Then discuss
1. How many lines were created?
2. Into how many parts that the paper was divided into?
3. How will you represent each part of the paper?
Introduce the word one fourth and the numerical value ¼.

Activity 3: Paper cup game

As the students aware of the paper game ‘which color do you choose’, this
paper cup activity can be used to explain ¼ and ¾ concept to the students.

Worksheet 3: Write the fractions of the shaded portion

Worksheet 4: Match the fractions with their numerical values

d. Activities to understand equivalent fractions

Project 1: work in pairs
Draw 4 rectangles of same size on the graph sheet. Follow the below instruction:
1. Divide the first rectangle into half and shade one half of it.

2
2. Divide the second rectangle into 4 parts and shade two parts.
3. Divide the third rectangle into 4 parts and shade all the 4 parts.
4. Divide the 4th rectangle into 3 parts and shade all the three parts.
5. Observe the first two rectangles and the last two rectangles.
6. What is similar among them?

e. Activities to connect the concepts with daily life context:

Project 2: work in small groups
 Divide the students into small groups.
 Give each group a meter-long thread.
 Give them a meter scale too.
 Ask them to measure the thread and also ask them to measure half and 3/4 of the thread.
 Ask them to enter the data in their notebook

Project 3: individual work

You are asked to prepare a cake for your friend’s birthday. The following materials are
required to prepare, in various quantities. Refer to the price list below and calculate the
amount you need to prepare a cake.
Materials Quantity Cost
