Assignment D-1.

2: Hardy Weinberg (20 points)

1. (1 point) A population has only two alleles, R and r, for a
particular gene. The allele frequency of R is 20%. What are the
frequencies of RR, Rr, and rr in the population. Show all your
work.

2. (1 point) A large population consists of 400 individual, of which

289 are homozygous dominant (MM), 102 are heterozygous
(Mm) and 9 are homozygous recessive (mm). Determine the
allele frequencies of M and m.

3. (3 points) Imagine that a particular trait in a population is

determined by two alleles A and a. In a population of 4000
individuals, the number of those of each genotype is AA=2240,
Aa=1520 and aa=240.
a. What are the genotype percentages for this generation?
AA _____ Aa _____ aa ______
b. What are the frequencies of the two alleles?
c. Using the frequencies you calculated in the previous
question, and assuming that the requirements for the
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium are met, indicate the
genotype frequencies for the next generation: AA _____
Aa_____ aa_______

4. (3 points) A population is in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium for a

certain trait.
a. If p = 0.7, what is q?
b. What is the frequency of the heterozygotes in this
population?
c. What is the frequency of individuals with the dominant
phenotype?

5. (4 points) If 36% of the population has a phenotype that shows

the dominant trait:
a. What is the frequency of the dominant allele?
b. What is the frequency of the recessive allele?
c. What % of the population will have the recessive trait?
d. What % of the population will be heterozygous?

6. (3 points) Cystic fibrosis is a recessive condition that affects

about 1 in 2500 people in the Caucasian population of Canada.
Calculate the following:
a. The population frequencies for the dominant C and
recessive c alleles

b. The percentage of the population that is a carrier of the
recessive gene
c. The number of people in your closest twenty that are likely
to be carriers of the cystic fibrosis allele.

7. (5 points) Myotonic dystrophy is an autosomal recessive disorder

affecting 1 in 500 people in Quebec.
a. What is the expected frequency for the dominant allele in
the Quebec population?
b. What is the expected frequency for the recessive allele in
the Quebec population?
c. What percent of the Quebec population would you expect
to be homozygous for the normal (non-disease) allele?
d. Myotonic dystrophy affects one in 7500 people in all of
Canada. What would be the expected frequency of
carriers of myotonic dystrophy in Canada?
e. Assuming the population of Canada is 30 million people,
what number of people in Canada would you expect to be
carriers?
