Helical compression spring

Problem 1
A compression spring made of music wire is used for static loading. Wire diameter
d = 1.4 mm, coil outside diameter D. 12.1 mm, and there are eight active coils.
Also, assume that the spring ends are squared and ground. Find the following:
a) Spring rate and solid length
b) Greatest load that can be applied without causing a permanent set in excess of
2%
c) Spring free length with load determined in part (b) that causes the spring to be
solid
d) Is buckling going to be a problem? If it is, recommend what you would change
in the redesign.
Problem 2
A helical compression spring will be used in a pressure relief valve. When the
valve is closed, the spring length is 2.0 in, and the spring force is to be 1.50 Ib. The
spring uses a wire diameter of 0.0577 in and a spring diameter of 0.375 in, and has
a solid length of 1.25 in. Use hard drawn ASTM A227 wire, squared and ground
ends, and ignore buckling since the spring is in a cage. Find the force needed to
compress the spring to its solid length, the number of active coils, the spring's free
length, the spring rate and the safety factor against torsional yielding.
