This set of problems is intended for practice purposes. This will help the
students understand the subject in depth. Students must solve each problem
on their own with absolute understanding.

1. Determine the values of x and y for which the matrices are equal.
     2
1 x 1 y−2 x 1 9 1
(i) (ii)
y −3 3x − 2 −3 y 5 4x 5

2 4 4 10
2. Suppose A = and B = . For the above two matrices
−3 2 2 5
verify that

(i) (AT )T = A (iii) (AB)T = B T AT

(ii) (A + B)T = AT + B T (iv) (6A)T = 6AT

3. Show that if A is an m × n matrix, then AAT is symmetric.

4. In matrix theory, many of the familiar properties of the real number system
are not valid. If a and b are real numbers, then ab = 0 implies that a = 0
or b = 0. Find two matrices such that AB = 0 but A ̸= 0 and B ̸= 0.
5. let A and B be n × n matrices. Explain why, in general, the given formula
is not valid.

(i) (A + B)2 = A2 + 2AB + B 2 (ii) (A + B)(A − B) = A2 − B 2

6. Use either Gaussian elimination or Gauss–Jordan elimination to solve the

given system or show that no solution exists.

(i) (iii)

4y + 3z = 8,
x + y + z = 9,
2x − z = 2
8y + 6z = −6,
3x + 2y = 5
−2x + 4y − 6z = 40
(iv)
(ii) 10x + 4y − 2z = −4,
−3w − 17x + y + 2z = 2
−2y − 2z = −8, w+x+y =6
3x + 4y − 5z = 13 8w − 34x + 16y − 10z = 4

7. Nilpotent matrix, defined by Am = 0 for some integer m. Give examples

for three such nilpotent matrices?

8. Show that every square matric A can be written as a sum of a symmetric
and a skew-symmetric matrix. (Hint: Show that A + AT is symmetric and
A − AT is skew symmetric)

9. Find the rank of the given matrices.

   

(iii) 1 0 4

(vii)  0 1 3 −1 2 10 8
(iv)   
7 −1 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 3
4 5 1 −2 1 8 −1 1 2 6

10. Let A be a nonzero 4 × 6 matrix. (a) What is the maximum rank that A
can have? (b) If rank (A|B) = 2, then for what value(s) of rank (A) is
the system AX = B, B ̸= 0, inconsistent? Consistent?
