Convex Mirror
Convex Mirror
Theory: The real image-formed by a convex lens acts as a virtual object for the
convex minor. When the light rays from the virtual object falls normally on the
mirror, they retrace the path after reflection and the final image of the combination
coincides with the actual object
Formula: The focal length of the convex mirror is given by F = R/2 where F is
the focal length and R is the radius of curvature of the minor
Procedure: 1. Place the convex lens in front of the light, adjust the position of the
screen to get a clear image of the illuminated object.
2. Place the convex mirror between the lens and the screen one behind the other in a
straight line as shown in the ray diagram
3. Adjust the position of mirror so that an invented image of the object formed by
reflection from the convex mirror is formed at the object itself.
4. The distance between screen and the convex mirror is the radius of curvature.
5.Repeat the above procedure for different positions of the lens and determine the
focal length using the formula.
OBSERVATION:

Calculations:
Precautions:
1 Ensure that the lens stand, minor stand, screen are vertical and not shaky.
2. Do not disturb the position of the lens and the light source while noting the
position of the screen.
3. The focal length of convex lens should be large than the focal length of the
convex minor
SOURCE OF ERROR:
1. The image may not be very clear due to spherical and chromatic aberration in
lenses and mirrors
2. The formula used to calculate the focal length is for paraxial rays.
RESULT: The focal length of the convex mirror was found to be ………..cm
