VACATION DANGERS

You might not connect the two, but did you know that going on vacation can be
dangerous or even horrible?

If you go on vacation by car, did you know that it can be a dangerous way to travel?
People usually have accidents because they are very tired after driving for hours.
This was what happened to San Diego TV news reporter Michel Grendo. He told us
about his experience. When his late-night TV news show ended at midnight, he took
his car and drove to Miami Beach for a long weekend. Unfortunately, he never

because he broke his leg and spent his whole vacation in the hospital! Nobody else
was hurt.

If driving is not for you, you could take a bus. In the summer, there are a lot of people
who go on vacation at the same time as you. If it’s hot, people often get angry, and a
perfect vacation can soon become horrible. Geologist Sarna Mendez told us about
her experience. She was on a tour bus to see the beautiful White Sands National
Monument in south-central New Mexico. On the first day, the bus broke down in the
middle of the desert, miles from anywhere. They slept on the bus for two terrible
nights before a rescue bus arrived. Sarna said it was a bus trip to forget!

VACATION OR EDUCATION?

A family of three people decided to go on vacation. There’s nothing strange there.

Sara and Jorge Miller decided to take their 15-year-old daughter, Judy, on a one-year
long vacation. Judy thought it was amazing. "Wow, no school," she said. Her mom
took along all her books, and gave her lessons, so Judy had a lot of studying to do.
Judy knew it was no vacation!

They decided to travel 2500 miles across the United States. They followed the I-80
route from San Francisco, California to Teaneck, New Jersey. On September 1, they
drove slowly and looked at their beautiful country. They visited lots of interesting
places and also important monuments. The I-80 route is famous. At Salt Lake City,
they stopped and saw the awesome Leonardo Museum, which is a museum of art,
technology, creativity and science. The family drove through Wyoming, and Sara
loved the Natural Corrals Archeological Site in Superior. It was really amazing
because she loves history. They explored a place made of volcanic lava. Then they
drove far north, and Judy ran to the top of Marblehead Lighthouse! It’s 15 meters tall!
She won the race with her father and she felt so proud. Her father was very tired! At
the top, they looked at the beautiful water of Lake Erie. On the other side of the lake
was Canada but they didn’t see it because it was far away and the weather wasn’t
very good.

They finally arrived in NJ on July 31. They explored the city for a few days then they
drove back home to San Francisco for 43 hours, non-stop. It was time to start the
