Overview
In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, scholarly focus intensifies on the pivotal role of digital
innovation and transformation in fostering sustainability across diverse organizational sectors
(Fernandes et al., 2023; Fiedler et al., 2023). Contemporary organizations grapple with
environments characterized by unprecedented levels of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and
ambiguity (VUCA), often called a VUCA world (Symonds, 2023; Troise et al., 2022). This
context arises from disruptive factors, encompassing unstable financial markets, high-velocity
business cycles, hyper-competition, frequent technological changes, globalized value chains,
shorter product life cycles, and the rise of digital economy (Ardolino et al., 2022; Donthu &
Gustafsson, 2020; Iftikhar et al., 2022).

1
Statistically, 94% of the Fortune 1000 companies have grappled with disruptions in their supply
chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Chowdhury et al., 2021). Digital technologies emerge
as linchpins for organizational adaptation, offering solutions to mitigate disruptions and bolster
sustainability efforts (Ali et al., 2023). Recent studies on digital transformation are burgeoning
(Xing et al., 2023), promoting a compelling call for additional research to deepen our insights
into the role of digital technologies and capabilities in the existing scenario, given their
transformative impact on traditional enterprise patterns (Colombari et al., 2023; Sousa &
Rocha, 2019).

Insights from different sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, finance and so forth,
underscore the sector-specific nature of digital responses to the crisis (World Economic Forum,
2023). A comprehensive survey involving over 4000 global enterprises demonstrates the
potential for digital transformation actions to enhance enterprise value (Deloitte, 2023).
Notably, a Gartner CIO survey highlights that 54% of Australian and New Zealand (ANZ)
enterprises have increased their investment in digital innovation during the COVID-19
pandemic (Gartner, 2020). For example, research from the MIT Center for Transportation and
Logistics indicates that supply chain digital transformation has the potential to halve process
costs and increase revenue by 20% (Lindquist, 2023). As such, it is indispensable to explore
digital strategies for post-pandemic business transformation and rethinking sustainable
development initiatives.

The book aims to delve into the current status and future pathways of digital innovation and
transformation towards sustainability in the VUCA era. Case studies, qualitative, quantitative,
and systematic literature reviews will be of particular interest. The book provides insights and
guidance for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers by exploring these areas in-depth,
making it an excellent supplement for senior or graduate-level programs in Information
Systems, Business and Management, Supply Chain and Logistics, and related fields.
