UMBB/IGEE/EE331/L05 – All Groups Chapter 04:Three-phase Rectifiers

Problem set No 05

Problem: 01
A three-phase half-wave controlled converter is connected to a 380V (line) supply. The load current
is constant at 32A and is independent of the firing angle. Find the average load voltage at firing angles of 00
and 450, given that the thyristors have a forward voltage drop of 1.2V. Determine the current and PIV rating
required for the thyristors, and calculate the average power dissipation in each thyristor.

Problem: 02
The Three-phase full-bridge rectifier has a three-phase source of 480 V rms line-to-line, and the load
is a 25Ω resistance in series with a 50-mH inductance. Determine (a) the dc level of the output voltage, (b)
the dc and first ac term of the load current, (c) the average and rms current in the diodes, (d) the rms current
in the source, and (e) the apparent power

Problem: 03

A three-phase, uncontrolled bridge rectifier is supplied from a 480 V (rms, line to-line), 50 Hz 3-phase
AC source, feeding a highly inductive load with R=50 Ω.
(a) Plot the waveforms of the output voltage, diode current, diode voltage and supply current.
(b) Determine:
1. the mean values of the load voltage and current,
2. the average and rms values of the diode currents,
3. PIV of the diodes,
4. the rms value of the supply current,
5. the rectification ratio (converter efficiency)
Problem: 04
A three-phase, uncontrolled bridge rectifier is connected to a 220 V (rms, line-to-line), 50 Hz 3-phase
AC supply. The rectifier is supplying an inductive load of R=25Ω and L=100mH. Determine Fourier series:
1. the average values of the rectifier output voltage and current,
2. the amplitude of the most dominant harmonic of the load voltage and current,
3. the rms value of the supply current,
4. the %THD of the supply current
5. the supply apparent power and power factor.

Problem: 05
A three-phase, fully controlled bridge rectifier is connected to a 220 V (rms, line-to-line) 50 Hz 3-phase
AC supply. The rectifier is supplying a pure resistive load of R=25Ω. Determine:
(a) the required firing angle if the average output voltage is 50% of the maximum output voltage,
(b) the average and rms values of the load current,
(c) the average and rms values of the thyristor current,
(d) the rectification ratio
