ASSIGNMENT No.

-01
SUBJECT: - ENGINEERING MECHANICS.

1 In Fig, the resultant force F is 300 N and the angles α and β are 25° and 45°, respectively. Resolve
the force F into a pair of components P along line OA and Q along line OB.

2 Determine a pair of horizontal and vertical components of the 1000 N force on the cantilever beam
in Fig. (dimensions are in N and m)

3 State and explain the Newtons law’s of Mechanics.

4 Explain the terms

(a) Concurrent and Non-Concurrent Force System
(b) Plane and Non-Planer System of Forces.
5 The guy wire of the electric pole shown in the fig. makes 60° to the horizontal and is subjected to
20kN force. Find horizontal and vertical components of the force.

6. A system of forces acting on a body resting on an inclined plane is as shown in Fig. Determine the
resultant force if θ = 60°, W-1000 N, vertically downward, N =500 newton acting normal to the
plane. F= 100 N, acting down the plane, and T = 1200 N, acting parallel to the plane.
7. Three forces acting at centre of gravity of a block are shown in Fig. The direction of 300 N forces
may vary, but the angle between them is always 40 degrees. Determine the value of for which the
resultant of the three forces is directed parallel to the plane.

8. A 200 N sphere is resting in a trough as shown in Fig . Determine the reactions developed at contact
surfaces. Assume all contact surfaces are smooth.

9. A roller weighing 10 kN rests on a smooth horizontal floor and is connected to the floor by the bar
AC as shown in Fig. Determine the force in the bar AC and reaction from the floor, if the roller is
subjected to a horizontal force of 5 kN and an inclined force of 7 kN an shown in the figure.
10. A roller weighing 2000N rest on an inclined bar weighing 500N shown in fig. Assuming weight of
bar AB is negligible , determine the reactions at support C and D .

11. A wire rope is fixed at two points A and D as shown in Fig. Weights 20 kN and 25 kN are attached
to it at B and C, respectively. The weights rest with portions AB and BC inclined at 30 and 50°
respectively, to the vertical as shown in the figure Find the tension in segments AB, BC and CD of
the wire. Determine the inclination of the segment CD to vertical.

12. Cylinder A weighing 4000 N and cylinder B weighing 2000 N rest on smooth inclines as shown in
Fig. They are connected by a bar of negligible weight hinged to geometric centres of the cylinders
by smooth pins. Find the force P to be applied at shown in the figure such that it will hold the system
in the given position.

13. A body is subjected to the three forces as shown in Fig . If possible, determine the direction θ of the
force F so that the resultant is in X-direction.
14. Three sphere A, B and C weighing 200N, 400N and 200N respectively and having radii 400mm,
600mm and 400mm respectively are placed in a trench as shown in fig (a), Treating all contact
surfaces as smooth, determine the reactions developed.

15. The system of forces acting on a bell crank is shown in Fig. Deter mine the magnitude, direction and
point of application of the resultant

16. Various forces to be considered for the stability analysis of a dam shown in Fig. The dam is safe if
the resultant force passes through middle third base. Verify whether the dam is safe.
17. Determine the magnitude, direction and line of action of the equilibriant of the given set of coplanar
forces acting on a planar structure shown in Fig.

18. A cable car used for carrying materials in a hydroelectric project is at rest on a track formed at an
angle of 30° with the vertical. The gross weight of the car and its load is 60 kN and its centroid is at
a point 800 mm from the track half way between the axles. The car is held by a cable as shown in
Fig. The axles of the car are at a distance 1.2 m. Find the tension in the cables and reaction at each of
the axles neglecting friction of the track.

19. Find the reactions developed at supports A and B of the loaded beam shown in fig.
20. An equilateral triangular plate of sides 200 mm is acted upon by four forces as shown in fig
determine the magnitude and direction of resultant of this system if forces.

21. Determine the resultant of the four forces acting on a body as shown in Fig.

22. Determine the resultant of the three forces acting on the dam section shown in Fig. and locate its
inter- section with the base AB. For a safe design this inter- section should be within the middle
third. Is it a safe design?
23. A couple of magnitude M and the three forces shown are applied to an angle bracket as illustrated.

24. Beam AB, 8.5 m long, is hinged at A and has a roller support at B. The roller at 45 to the horizontal.
Find the reactions at A and B, if the loads acting are as Shown in fig. find the reaction at A and B.
