TASK 70-62-12-380-006

OXIDE FILM COATING OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS

1. General.
CAUTION: THE PROCESS IS NOT APPLICABLE TO PARTS CONTAINING
R CADMIUM PLATED STEEL INSERTS.
This procedure is used for the chromate treatment of aluminum
R alloys, by immersion of the parts in a chromic acid base
solution.
2. Equipment. The following equipment is required for the
application of this process:
A. Safety equipment and devices which are standard equipment
in surface treatment shops such as: eye bath, emergency
R showers, protective clothing against electro plating
products and means for neutralizing acid or alkaline
splashing.
B. Processing plant for neutralizing waste and used solutions.
C. Efficient ventilation system for extracting and
neutralizing vapors.
D. The sulfo-chromic chemical cleaning tank shall be made of
steel lined with lead, or high density polyethylene or
polypropylene.
E. The water rinse tank, used after sulfo-chromic cleaning
shall be made of steel lined with high density
polyethylene or polypropylene and equipped with a spraying
system.
F. The chemical film coating station shall include:
(1) A stainless steel tank or a high density polyethylene
or polypropylene-lined tank.
(2) A controllable electric heater capable of heating the
solution to 105°F (40°C).
(3) A fume extractor.
G. The water rinse tank shall be made of carbon steel painted
R externally with corrosion resistant paint and lined with
high density polyethylene or polypropylene.

H. The hot water rinse tank shall be made of stainless steel
or polypropylene and be equipped with a controllable
electric heater capable of heating the solution to 140°F
(60°C).
I. A ventilated oven with temperature control from 32 to
160°F (0 to 70°C).
3. Materials.
NOTE: Interchangeability. Products listed in QPL-81706 for use
in the same Class and method of application as the
products listed below may be used for this procedure.
These products will provide equivalent coatings within
each class insofar as performance of the chemical
conversion coating is concerned.
CAUTION: PRODUCTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE FROM A CHEMICAL
STANDPOINT. DIFFERENT MATERIALS MUST NOT BE MIXED.

4. Procedure.
WARNING: CHROMIC SOLUTIONS ARE VERY ACTIVE AND CAUSE SERIOUS
BURNS. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN, EYES AND CLOTHING.
AVOID BREATHING VAPORS. IF CONTACT OCCURS, WASH
IMMEDIATELY WITH ABUNDANT QUANTITY OF WATER.
OPERATOR SHOULD WEAR FACE SHIELD, GLOVES, PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING AND PROTECTIVE SHOES.
A. Immerse parts in the sulfo-chromic cleaning solution
listed in paragraph 3.A. for 1-2 minutes.
B. Rinse by immersion in water.
WARNING: ACID SOLUTIONS ARE VERY ACTIVE AND CAUSE SERIOUS
BURNS. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN, EYES AND CLOTHING.
AVOID BREATHING VAPORS. IF CONTACT OCCURS, WASH
IMMEDIATELY WITH ABUNDANT QUANTITY OF WATER.
WARNING: OPERATOR SHOULD WEAR FACE SHIELD, GLOVES, PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING AND PROTECTIVE SHOES.
R CAUTION: WHEN AN INTERCHANGEABLE PRODUCT IS USED FOR THIS
R PROCEDURE, FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER’S MIXING AND
R APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PRODUCT.
R C. Immerse parts in the chemical film coating solution listed in
R paragraph 3.B. and maintain at specified temperature for 5-
R 10 minutes.
D. Rinse by immersion in water.
E. Rinse by immersion in lukewarm water at 140°F (60°C).
F. Dry using clean, dry air or in a dust free, ventilated
oven heated at 140-160°F (60-70°C).
G. Remove masking if previously applied.
CAUTION: SUBSEQUENT PAINTING MUST BE PERFORMED NO SOONER THAN 30
MINUTES OR LATER THAN 24 HOURS OF THE FILM COATING PROCESS.
5. Quality Assurance.
A. The chemical film coating process shall not cause any
noticeable variation in the original dimensions of parts.

B. The film coating coloration varies from an iridescent
yellow to dark brown. It must be uniform in color. The
presence of slight powdery residues is not a cause for
rejection provided that, when wiped with a cloth, the
metal is not exposed.
