Class Notes 3: Basics of Algebra
Topic: Introduction to Algebra
Date: December 27, 2024 Key Concepts: 1. What is Algebra?: • Algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with variables and the rules for manipulating them. It is the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for their use. 2. Algebraic Expressions: • Variable: A symbol (usually a letter) that represents an unknown value (e.g., x, y). • Constant: A fixed value (e.g., 5, -3). • Coefficient: A number that multiplies a variable (e.g., 3 in 3x). 3. Solving Equations: • An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal (e.g., 2x + 5 = 15). • To solve an equation, you isolate the variable by performing the same operation on both sides of the equation. 4. Basic Operations: • Addition and Subtraction: Combine like terms (e.g., 3x + 2x = 5x). • Multiplication and Division: Distribute and simplify (e.g., 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12). • Exponentiation: Powers of variables (e.g., x² = x * x).
