EXPERIMENT 1
AIM:
To prepare 100 mL of 0.05M solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate (Mohr’s salt)
THEORY:
Molecular mass of Mohr’s salt (FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O) = 392 gmol–1
Hence, for preparing 100 ml of 0.05M Mohr’s salt solution,
0.05 ×392 ×100
Mohr’s salt required = = 1.96 g
1000
APPARATUS:
Watch glass, 250 mL beaker, glass rod, 100 mL volumetric flask, dropper and wash
bottle.
CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
Mohr’s salt, conc. H2SO4 and distilled water.
PROCEDURE:
1. 1.96 g of Mohr’s salt is accurately weighed in a watch glass and transferred into a
clean100 mL volumetric flask using a funnel
2. Watch glass is thoroughly washed with distilled water to transfer the sticking salt
completely into the flask. The salt is dissolved in the flask with gentle stirring.
3. About 3 mL of conc. H2SO4 is added to the solution in the flask to check the hydrolysis
of Mohr’s salt.
4. The funnel is washed with distilled water and the washings are transferred into the
volumetric flask
5. Enough distilled water is added to the volumetric flask carefully upto below the etched
mark on its neck with the help of wash bottle
6. The last few drops of distilled water with a dropper until the lower level of the meniscus
just touches the mark on the volumetric flask.
7. The measuring flask is stoppered and shaken gently to make the solution homogeneous
and labelled it as 0.05M Mohr’s salt solution.
RESULT:
0.05M Mohr’s salt solution is prepared
