d) Answer all the questions in Section I and only five questions from Section II.

f) Marks may be given for correct working even if the answer is wrong.
g) Non-programmable silent electronic calculators and KNEC Mathematical tables may be
used, except where stated otherwise.
h) This paper consists of 15 printed pages.
i) Candidates should check the question paper to ascertain that all the pages are printed as

1. 1. Ryan bought a cooker worth Ksh 40,000 on hire purchase by paying a deposit of Ksh
4,000 and the balance in 36 equal monthly instalments. If the simple interest rate is
20% per annum, calculate the monthly instalment amount. (4 marks)
2. 2. Two taps P and Q, working together, can fill a tank in 3 hours 36 minutes. Tap P alone
takes 3 hours longer than Tap Q to fill the same tank. Calculate the time Tap P takes to
fill the tank. (4 marks)
3. 3. Simplify the expression (2 - √3) / (2√3 + 3) without using a calculator. Express your
answer in the form a + b√c, where a, b, and c are integers. (4 marks)
4. 4. The quantity P varies directly as the cube of Q and inversely as the square root of R. If
P increases in the ratio 8:5 and R decreases by 19%, calculate the percentage change in
Q. (4 marks)
5. 5. (a) Expand (1 - 2x)^6 in ascending powers of x up to the fourth term. (2 marks)
(b) Use this expansion to estimate the value of (0.9)^6 correct to three decimal places.

6. 6. Three types of tea A, B, and C are mixed in the ratio 2:3:4. The costs per kilogram are
Ksh 150, Ksh 140, and Ksh 90, respectively. Find the selling price of 12 kg of the mixture

7. 7. In a circle with centre O, VOR and PTS are straight lines. Given that ST = 21 cm, TV = 7
cm, and PV = 24 cm, and PVW is a tangent at V, calculate: (a) Length of PQ. (3 marks) (b)

8. 8. The probability that a bus will be late is 1/5. If Rafiki boards the bus when it is on
time with a probability of 9/10 and when it is late with a probability of 1/3, find the
probability that Rafiki will not board the bus. Use a tree diagram. (4 marks)
9. 9. The coordinates of A and B are (-2,5,4) and (1,-1,10). A point Q divides AB externally
in the ratio 5:2. Find the coordinates of Q. (4 marks)
10. 10. Solve the trigonometric equation: 2cos^2(x) - sin(x) = 1 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 360°. (4 marks)
11. 11. In a region R, bounded by line PRQ, where angle PRQ ≥ 60° and the area of triangle
PRQ > 15 cm², represent the region R graphically. (4 marks)
12. 12. A pipe has internal and external diameters of 8 cm and 10 cm, respectively,
measured to the nearest cm. If the length of the pipe is exactly 63 cm, calculate the
percentage error in the volume. (4 marks)

19. 19. In an arithmetic progression (A.P.), the 2nd, 5th, and 11th terms form a geometric
