1.0 PURPOSE: To define standards and tolerances for catalog style thermowells.

2.0 SCOPE: This standard applies to all personnel who specify, manufacture and inspect
catalog style thermowells. It defines minimum head lengths, maximum root
diameters, raised face diameters, standard wrench flat dimensions and standard
stamping requirements.

This standard defines common tolerances for all Catalog style thermowells. These
tolerances are to be used unless noted otherwise. For special tolerances not listed
below, consult Engineering.

• SANITARY THERMOWELL - Stamp 3A Logo on the head section of the thermowell.

4.0 TOLERANCES:

IMPORTANT: Repair of machining defects or other defects by welding is not permitted without
written approval from the Engineering Manager.

Standards:

Stem Length A  12": +0", -0.06" A > 12": +0", -0.12"

Tip Thickness A  12”: +0.06", -0" A > 12": +0.12”, -0"

Insertion Length A  12": 0.12" A > 12”: ±0.18”

Bore Size +0.005”, -0.003” (Typical ±0.002 inches)

Bore Concentricity ±10% of minimum wall thickness

Process Thread See MR-3002TX Tolerances for NPT Threads

Use the tolerance for specified for "Process Threads" under the
"WIKA Thermowell Standards" heading.
Any damage to the first six threads must be reported to a
quality inspector.

Instrument Thread See MR-7010TX, Standard Dimensions for Internal Tapered

Instrument Threads
See MR-3002TX Tolerances for NPT Threads
Use the tolerance specified for "Instrument Threads" under the
"WIKA Thermowell Standards" heading.
Any damage to the first six threads must be reported to a
quality inspector.

Tip of Well Break corners and remove burrs.

Surface Finish

Flange Face: 125 - 250 in AARH

30 to 55 grooves/in.
serrated spiral or serrated concentric

Bore: 10 ± 6 in AARH*

All other external machined surfaces (including tip end):

Sanitary Thermowells:
ALL wetted surfaces 16 - 22 inch AARH
(sanitary flange face, insertion, tip, etc.)

Diameter ± 0.020" within 1" of root

± 0.020" within 1" of tip
± 0.030" at all intermediate diameters
± 0.020" at all intermediate diameters of step

 Surface finishes of bore outside this tolerance are not necessarily cause for rejection but may
indicate a potential process malfunction (e.g. defective gun drill). Unless a customer has
specified this tolerance as part of the purchase order, other surface finishes may be accepted.
Production personnel must be notified of deviations from this range.

4.1 TAPER TOLERANCE:

Any thermowell that is 20” or longer will only have the last 6” tapered unless the customer
specifies otherwise.
