Dear Parents,

We are delighted to provide you with more information about our swimming provision which will be
taking place this term for students in Years 2 - 11. For students in Years 2 - 9 swimming is
mandatory and they will be expected to be fully prepared for their swimming lessons. Sanctions
will be issued for those turning up without their kit (Year 7-10). This will be in the form of a break
time detention for the first instance and for every subsequent instance this will be an after school
detention. Primary students will be dealt with separately for any sanctions. Sanctions are
something we do not want to give out to students and is a last resort. We would much rather have
students enjoying their lessons and being a full and active participant in lessons.

In Year 10 and 11 swimming will be an optional activity that they can choose. Within the older year
groups we will also be doing games such as water basketball; water volleyball; water polo and
personal survival. Living on an island surrounded by water, swimming is an essential life skill and
one in which we will always have as part of our curriculum in PE. Swimming is such a fantastic
activity and something the students should look forward to - particularly in the warm weather.

Over the summer the school invested in some excellent new equipment for swimming and we are
excited to put it to good use!

Please see below for our timetable of swimming lessons for each class. Swimming will begin
tomorrow (Thursday 5 September) and will go until Friday 25 October, so please send your child in
with their swimming kit starting from tomorrow. We will be swimming again after the Easter break,
and are introducing 4 weeks of swimming for Year 1 this year which we are really pleased to be
offering.
Your child’s swimming kit needs to consist of:
● Swimming trunks or swimming costume (one-piece costumes and no bikinis)
● A swimming cap - recommended - hair must be tied up if no swim cap
● Flip flops
● Goggles - recommended
● A towel
● A swim top - recommended

Students should, as a reminder, be wearing sun cream and bringing a water bottle to every class.

Students in Year 7-9 have up to 4 lessons of PE a week this year, with some groups having both
single and double lessons. Students will have either 2 singles or 1 double lesson of swimming
and will have up to 8 hours of swimming this half term.

Year 10 and 11 have 2 lessons per week and will swim in both these lessons if they choose this
option. These lessons will run for the whole term until 25 October.

Students can see on their timetable what their class is i.e. 7x1. They will also be shown their PE
schedule for this term in their first lesson and can also find it on their Teams PE page which will
be used for lots of PE information this year.

Year 10 and 11 can also see the information on their Teams PE page

Your support in our swimming program is greatly appreciated and we think it is a hugely valuable
activity to take part in. All students will benefit from this essential skill and have fun, whether they
are a beginner or a competent swimmer.

Yours sincerely,

Laura Parkes
Head of PE
